In case it might be of interest…Kona, HI saw its first grander of the season yesterday. Chip Van Mols captained the Monkey Biz II. 1064 at the scales…a 15-20 minute fight! Very green fish at the leader…and the leader broke after the second gaff. Fortunately the gaffs held!
I heard about the gaff job from my buddy Bart over there… he said they took that ole girl down more times than UGA took down Colt Brennan in the Sugar Bowl…
“When in Rome” Most billfish approaching that weight are usually killed and weighed in Kona and other hot spots around the world. Not saying it’s right or wrong, just how it is.
Besides sucking in Football and hating white people, I would like to take the time to let you folks new to fishing know that Hawai’ians also call Dolphin, Mahi Mahi. It means strong strong in their language which has been held on to even though they were colonized and conquered…
For years, dolphin was served in restaurants as dolphin (fish). Then, some yankees decided they could serve more fish in restaurants if they called dolphin by the Hawai’ian name. Mahi Mahi sounds more exotic.
So, by calling them Mahi Mahi you are
Choosing to call them a Hawai’ian name that was made up by people who hate you and were not smart enough to not be colonized.
2)… perpetuating to the yankification of the South and fishing in general.
… contributiong to more people wanting to eat them, thus contributing to the commercial fishing of them…
Agree with you on killing the fish…but you’ll seldom see a captured grander in Kona that isn’t weighed. Kona is increasingly a catch and release fishery however…trends are in our favor my friend.
Have spent a lot of time in Hawaii, both on and off the beaten path including living in Lahina, Maui for a year going to school and commercial and charter fishing and one thing I found about the true Hawaiian’s there is they are some of the most hospitable and friendly people that one would ever hope to meet, have made lifelong friends with some of them. Thier culture and customs are different then ours, not wrong or right, just different and as in anywhere else in the world where the culture and customs vary from ours, if one respects thier culture and customs while there, it will go a long way. I don’t think the Hawaiian language even contains a word for “hate”.
Sorry guys, I guess you missed the thread in the sports section about them (Hawai’ian Fans) saying they were going to beat UGA in the Sugar Bowl because the South is racist and the black players were not going to play hard for the white people when they saw how the Hawai’ians were… we had some fun with the Hawai’ian fans… this was kinda going along with that schtick…
Plus, this was kinda a spamming thread and everything I said about Mahi Mahi Mahi was true…
Some hawaiians aren’t all that nice, as a matter of fact they will literally kick your azz for being in the wrong spot if you’re not “local”. We (mainlanders) are referred to as “howleys”.
hoales, and if ya call a Hawaiian a “kanaka” ya better duck fast! Now if your in thier local surf break, ya better be invited or ready to take a thrashing to be able to surf it with em! They take thier surfing and local spots VERY serious!
In truth Mahi means good. Mahi mahi means good good. And it refers to the taste. Howlie is defined properly above and like anywhere else…outsiders aren’t always accepted (especially not at cock fights as I found out). But for a cheap boat ride for potential 1000 lb blues you can’t beat it. In 2002 I paid $130 for an 8 hour trip on the Magic and came home with a 165 lb yellowfin and a disappointed Captain!! Don’t turn down any offered trips to Hawaii. 9000 feet of water 200 yards out of the harbor explains the prices.
tight lines to all!
As if a grander was caught off of SC, anybody on here would release it.
I don’t kill marlin, but if I get a grander blue, get the gaffs out.
DBB
no thanks. unless its a tourney fish, id rather tag, take pics, and release em. see that fish swim again.

I’m with you. Only in a tournament would I kill the fish, even if it went a grand. Sad thing is DBB feels the same way…he’s caught a grander black…know what he did? Released it.

A word used mainly in Hawaii to describe a white person. Depending on how you say it, the word can mean either an insult or just a fact.
If you don’t take too many waves, don’t drop in, and take your set waves when they come most Hawaiian surfers are cool. Paddle out like you own the place and they’ll run you out quick.
Hawaiians are the nicest people I’ve met in the world, in or out of the surf. Except for the meth-heads on the west side, and every other side.
