Great start to a new year...

Since I ended 2012 by fishing New Year’s Eve, I thought it only fitting to usher in 2013 on the water. Capt. Rick & I struggled on the heels of the cold front yesterday, finding several schools but catching only two bass. Could not get the big schools to bite and never saw a trout.

Today was a different story. Left the landing at 11…fished til 3:30. Caught 8 trout ( 4 were keepers) and somewhere between 35 and 40 bass. Many of the bass were small…16" to 21"…but fun anyway. I did manage a 27" fish, a 25.5" fish and caught a tagged 23.5 incher. The tag had been there a while…note the long trailer of green slimy algae & growth. Most of the smaller bass’ tails were lit up bright blue…pretty animals! (I wore my blue sun mask to match and give Jighead something to comment on.)

Everything came on mud minnows. They ignored the plastics and Gulps. A great way to start 2013!

Amazing trip! Great to hear that the old places are paying off again after a two year drought.
Those pics with just the fish are really great. Makes the entire top half of the post much better looking. RE blue sun mask, wheres your matching beret?

I was hoping you got me a blue beret for Christmas???

I would always take just the fish’s pic…but most times they’re too big for me to hold in one hand, plus the lens is not wide enough angle to get in all their immense size!

Not buying your delusional measurement system. Neither is your wife.

Nice fish Jim, Thanks for the report. I was out of town so didn’t make it out but will be back at it this week end, hope the bite holds up.

good fish… wish i could find one red, let alone 35-40

“Lock em’ down”

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim this morning for the first time, at Beaufort Boat and Dock:smiley: We were coming out with a bucket of shrimp as he was driving up, and I said, hey, I know that face! Looked just like him!

I introduced myself and we chatted a while, then I went fishing before we missed the tide, although the fish didn’t start biting good until mid-afternoon. Should have hung around a while longer, wouldn’t have missed many fish.

Pleasure to meet you ,Jim:smiley:

My pleasure also, Larry. Always nice to meet the great folks who post on here!

Larry did they start biting for you on the last of the incoming or the first of the outgoing or both?

The bite was real slow on the incoming and we only caught a few short trout, but as soon as it turned out they really picked up. We ended up with about 35 trout and 10 black drum. No redfish. Go figure? 2 weeks ago we caught 30 reds in the same spot on the same tide. Water was 56 that day, maybe that’s why.

The fish Saturday were all deep, 12-18 feet and all caught on live shrimp and mud minnows. Didn’t get a bite on a artificial all day. Water was very clear, temp where we fished was 49.

This might be kind of random and hijacking the thread a little BUT I think you might have met my friend at the Chechessee boat landing Saturday evening.
I was stuck on Dawes.
Anyway I was visiting with him when I got back Sunday and he told me about someone he met and said that he built sweet boats.
Curious b/c I build some boats as well and would love to check yours out.

Needless to say I didn’t fish that day but I had wanted to fish the Broad River side of Dawes over the oyster shells.
18 foot of water doesn’t sound like fishing over oyster shells!

That’s funny

Yes, I did meet your friend at the Lemon Island ramp. He told me he was helping someone stuck on Daws, said he had hauled your wife back to the landing and brought you a tent and sleeping bag and a sub sandwich or something. You must have had a long night out there with all the Indian spirits to keep you company [:0]

We were only a couple of miles from you, would have been glad to help. My radio was on 16 all day but didn’t hear any calls like that. Always feel free to holler for me if you need me, “No Excuse”. Glad you made it back safe.

That’s usually a good bank for reds on the front side of Daws, at high tide. Not much water up there at low though:wink: I suspect that’s where they were Saturday, because they weren’t where we were:smiley:

You are welcome anytime to come by and check out my boats. I gave your friend a card with all my contact info on it.

Fallen trees, not shells. If you know where these guys live, you’ll know the spot.

I only have a hand-held VHF which I didnt have with me.
Might start bringing it now!
Do you have a website associated with your boat-building or where are you located?
He told me you were in Clyo, GA.

Oh and he hauled my 8 yeare old daughter and her friends.
They were all excited about camping until the boat was about to leave!

Friends like that are good to have:sunglasses:

Yes, I’m in Clyo, GA. No website, word of mouth advertising only. I’m just a one man operation and build boats by hand. They take a while.

Good idea to have a VHF, even though cell coverage is good in that area. My cell is 912-655-5674. I’m usually up there fishing every week or so. Give me a call if you want to come here, or maybe we can meet at the ramp sometime and you can check it out on the water.
