Great White in Port Royal Sound

Bet that got your attention…

Not sure how many of you are aware of Chris Fischer and the work he has done with Ocearch and great white tagging. I am not his biggest fan but am interested in the comings and goings of the sharks they are tagging in New England.

The screen shot below shows the movement of a 16 foot great white named Mary Lee over the past couple of weeks. Apparently, she was checking out some of our favorite fishing and bait gathering spots at the entrance to Port Royal sound. This is also the second time she has been in our area. Earlier in November, she passed by on her way to Jacksonville. Mary Lee is currently lingering around the Cape Hatteras area.

So, just how big is a 16 foot great white? Here is a picture of Mary Lee being tagged off of Cape Cod:

If you want to follow her movements, simply go to this site: http://sharks-ocearch.verite.com

I wonder if the surfers at the Folly knew she was lingering around looking for some tasty morsels. Pretty cool stuff…

OneLove: Mary Lee has been tracked for months on the Offshore Discussion thread!

Curious why no one in the local media has picked up on this. Chamber of Commerce embargo?

I know there is another smaller (14 ft) shark named Genie still lingering offshore in the Hump/Needle area. I just thought it was pretty cool that we had a great white INSHORE.

I guess we can now return to posting pictures of trout and reds…

Very Cool, thanks for sharing that!

Boy its gettin reel deep in here…

It’s made the local news several times in the last couple of months, and has been discussed here for at least the last 3 months. Where ya been?

Asleep apparently. Not the first time I’ve been late to the party and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

I saw a blurb in the Packet about Mary Lee in Charleston Harbor but didn’t realize she had been so close to here and in places that I frequent.

I’ll go back to sleep now. Let me know if anything exciting happens…

You missed the best part! She was tracked, to someones back yard, a couple of months ago!

Haha - that’s like the old Saturday Night Live skit “I know who you are, you’re that land shark. No ma’am, just a harmless dolphin.”

Let’s get together and feel alright

Candygram…

When I let my dogs swim off the boat I always carry my 40 cal pistol with me. If you love your dogs like I do, even excess caution is better.

The way a White Shark hits a target, your 40 won’t help!

I would imagine if a great white was close to your dogs swimming they would be dead before you got off your first shot.

I would just love to know how many are off our coast. It amazes me how much distance Mary Lee can cover.

The pistol is the only precaution I know to take. Other than not to let your dogs for for a swim. Your right about the white… not much warning.;

Mary Lees actually made the evening news in Charlotte. Their report had her located now up towards Charleston.

I have to correct. She is now up near Virginia Beach. Very active fish.

The scary thing is this is just 2 sharks that happened to be tagged. They are frequently near the inlets, sounds and nearshore reefs. What about all the other Whites out there, you KNOW they are all over the place! Yikes.
