Greetings All, New Guy Here.

Howdy. I’ve been perusing this site and others for the past month and half gleaning information regarding places to fish and how to surf fish (equipment, rigs, bait, etc.).

Some background on me:

Avid fisherman in my teens, mainly pickerel and bass, and lots of snapper fishing up in NJ. I did so some surf fishing as a teen and a younger man but it wasn’t anything serious. I only went because I was told there would be beer, bonfires, and persons of the opposite sex.

Fast forward in time and place many years later, and here I am stationed in Sumter and really missing the ocean and beach (spent last 5 years in Germany dead smack in the middle of w. europe). Decided I wanted to get back into fishing and really wanted to do it on the beach; hence the reason I’ve been on this fine site for the past few weeks.

Back to the present. Still in Kuwait but should be home and ready to cast a line in at Folly Beach this Saturday. Me and the Missus are planning on getting there early (though her concept of early and my concept of early differ drastically) and throwing some lines in. If you should be in the area that day, take some pity on the two very newb fisherman slinging lead up and down the beach.

I cannot tell you how excited I am to start fishing!

P.S.- I know I have tons to learn and have no fear of learning more.

Glad to have you join and thanks for your service. As I was told, " Just get your line in the water and enjoy."

Welcome home and thank you for your service! I’ve been to the pier twice in the past week without much success, but things will be picking up drastically in the next few weeks. There were croaker and the standard whiting being caught when I was there. As the water temp. drops the bull reds will be running and that’s when the real fun begins.

The mullet are running and the water temp is dropping. Just get lines wet in surf or the folly pier. Fishing is getting real good. As fellow military welcome back. Surely fishing will be a nice relaxation. If need any advice or help getting started feel free message me. Kevin

Thanks for the greetings. Plan on using some store bought frozen shrimp on a fish finder rig for the beginning. Have a cast net too so we’ll give that a go as well. Nice fish, Kevin!

fishingduo, was that king caught on folly pier this year??? if so good for you. you sure seem to put in enough time out there.

No but it was just this week on this coast. Folly pier has become great for Spanish. That cooler photo was actually yesterday. Filled up with 2-3lb Spanish all on live mullet. Water temp needs drop so some bigger boys show up here and not just hr north of us haha. Either way fishing has turned up quick in the past week

yeah that water sure is nicer up in the grand strand. was up that way saturday and its soo pretty.

Nice catch Duo, were those mullet on popping corks or off the bottom? Just curious as I’m very limited on my Spanish knowledge.

Mullet free lined or corks. Just keep them near top of water column. This time of year the mullet show up thick and the gamefish follow! Honestly I have seen them even caught on cut mullet on double drops when bait schools are thick ha

Made it to the USA this morning! Just finished putting line on both reels and building the fishing cart. Just a few more incidentals and we are good to go for Saturday morning!

Just got back from Folly Beach. Had a great time! For not knowing what the heck we were doing, we had a great time. My 1st cast got a whiting and my second cast got me this:

Ended up catching 3 whiting altogether and the bonnie. Had a great time and already looking forward to next weekend!

welcome home
