Grouper Help

I know it is a long shot, anyone want to pm me some grouper help? I’ll be down next week and have never landed a even a near legal one. I’ll have my much younger little sister with us and want to impress her, she’s 20 years younger.

You better plan going a good ways offshore for grouper!

they are at the tire reef, not a ton of them but some; but very hard to find and get to bite because of BSB. we caught 7 one day with the biggest being 20" (not legal but close)along with some short ARS. have seen keeper gags come out of there though. but like prayot said head on out to 80’ or so. If you run straight out from st helena headed straight to the banks you will run into a bunch of good bottom around 80’. Caught my first Mangrove snapper out there last trip out, missed the state record by a lil more than a pound.bunch of good bottom not far south of the edisto offshore reef also. And if all else fails go to the banks and fish the big ledge out there, can’t miss it…lol…

Thanks for that input, not sure I’ll be able to get to the ledge with my little sis. She’s only 13 and I’m not sure she’d be that useful out there if we needed to overcome some problem. I was hoping to find something in the 20-30 mile range. I’m thinking about looking around out past the Ross at that hard bottom or something a little further south since we’ll be out of Daufuskie this time.

There may not be a grouper in my future this trip. She’ll enjoy it anyway.

There is absolutely no need to go to the ledge to catch grouper. Catch some bigger live baits and fish them where you normally catch c bass. Use heavier tackle and be patient. Focusing on smaller artificial structure that doesn’t get pounded as much by rec fishermen will produce better fish for you than larger structure. Grouper are harder to get out of serious structure anyway unless you are set up perfectly and have strong tackle. Fish bigger baits up off the bottom a bit in one spot. Grouper will eventually bite if you keep at them on the same spot long enough for the c bass to calm down.

Thanks phin, that’s good advice and puts some hope back in me. When you say bigger baits, you mean like large pin fish or something different? Menhaden or greenies work?
