Putting a new grouper rig together. Baitrunner 12000D spooled with 80 lb braid. Think I am gonna to go with a 50 lb mono topshot. What weight rod do you guys recommend? Any brand rod you like more in specific?
NOT a trevala…
They had a few Ugly sticks at sportsmans warehouse that were 6’6". Had both 20-50lb and 40-80lb. Didnt buy because I Did not like how far from the butt the spool would sit, it was almost two feet. I am guessing the 40-80lb would be a good weight class though?
Trevala 58XXH or Terez XXH. Trevalas will break, but they’re warrantied if bought locally- you can walk in and get a replacement.
You’re a little bit underclassed power-wise with the reel and line if structure fishing. Flat bottom would be okay.
Need to be over 30lbs drag with 80lb line to get them out of rough structure.
There are other options, but the good stuff is quite a bit of money and will depend on your budget.

The longer length from the butt is actually preferable if you work the rod and reel with the butt under your arm at the rail…

I have my Shimano big bait runner longcasts spooled with 65 lb power pro and they’re on medium action Shakespeare ugly stik tiger rods. The ugly stik tiger rods are great. I wouldn’t waste my money buying anything more expensive for grouper fishing. They’re tough rods. Why do you want a 50lb mono topshot on top of your powerpro for bottom fishing?

Hard to beat those ugly stix for the price. I also like Star rods. For that I prefer a long butt and medium length rod.

Shock absorption and visibility. Should I go heavier mono? No mono? What do you guys prefer
Courtland turned me onto the Star Paraflex a few years ago, can’t say a bad thing about them to date. I have yet to break one, can’t say that about the Trevala’s I’ve had but, the warranty is great on the Trevala. Sort of like Nikon optics, they’ll give you a new one if it breaks, they just break at the wrong time.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Interesting to see the vastly different opinions. Our go to grouper setups were always Senators on 5’9" or 6’ Star 50-80lb rods, 50 lb mono, 120 lb leaders. That was Gulf, commercial style…lock the drag down full and winch em up quick as possible. Cut bait and live bait, no jigs. Every boat used the same stuff, Senators and short heavy rods. I haven’t figured out yet whether the difference in styles is a regional thing (NC/SC since I’ve been out of college vs. Big Bend area of FL) or something new since I left and went to college and haven’t yet gotten back into grouper fishing every weekend like we used to.
Trevala used to have a good warranty, but they changed it up last year. Now, they’re only warrantied for 1 year, and you have to have a receipt to get it replaced, and none of the shops that I’ve been to would replace them. Have to contact and ship to Shimano yourself. This really sucks for us that bought rods with lifetime warranties that didn’t require a receipt. Too many people were abusing the system, so Shimano changed their policy. I’ve got a broken $180 rod that I can’t do anything with.

I have a Star Paraflex 5’9" XXH jigging spinning rod that I’m going to be selling very soon. I bought it as a grouper fishing rig but have no use for it as I recently purchased a 2 piece rod for traveling purposes. It’s a seriously badass rod that’s in almost new condition and would be perfect for your grouper rig.
This is the rod.

Andyb I hear ya. My live bait grouper rod is a Penn 6/0 on a bent butt swivel tip, 100 lb class rod. Stick it in one of the aft rod holders with a Tomtate on a 10/0 circle hook and let Rodney catch him.

Won’t be recommending Trevala anymore.
Every one I have ever had has broken- most often at the tip or the rings pop out of the guides.
Is the same true for Terez?
Seeker Hercules SH-60H and 60XH are my grouper rods, btw.

Whatever you say.
I will keep my rods under my arm and my reels in 4 low.
All Shimano rods are now limited to a 1 year warranty.

Forrest Gump would look at Shimano and say, “Well, one less thing!”
I will never pay for what Terez rods cost without a better warranty than that. They all break eventually.
Drag was locked up on my Avet raptor, and I had the rod in the rod holder fishing a big bait on the bottom for gags. Big shark eats the bait and breaks my Seeker Hercules rod right about the time the tip touches the water. Reeled the shark in with the first 10" of the rod sticking out the shark’s mouth like a toothbrush and sent the pieces back to Seeker and got a new custom (original rod was custom colors) made and sent to me no charge.
That’s what I don’t mind paying for when I buy a product, and I have bought enough since then that Seeker has more than paid for that replacement rod.

The best I ever used was a Penn Slammer 80. Don’t know if you can still get them or not. Used a penn 6/0 - the old one with the brass spool and metal gears. used 80# braid& set the star drag with a hammer.
