Had the center-rigger line in the water @ 8am turned to drop back the port long rigger and the center rigger lights up with a sail. Get the center rigger and long rigger out and start on a short rigger and the long rigger takes off. Wahoo. Managed to put three wahoo and a sailfish in the boat before we could put a full spread in the water. Had 5 wahoo in the boat by 11am and decided we would go play with the tuna. Managed one decent blackfin before the sharks moved in. After that all we could get back to the boat were little guys. Ron managed to get completely spooled on what was probably a volkswagon-sized AJ. I believe pdstalvey has some go-pro footage of the tuna-munching spree. Fun day had by all. Everything hurts. I must be getting old.
How deep did you fish? Heard of a boat catching 6 wahoo up that way this weekend between 350-600 ft which seems a little deeper than I’m used to.
600 was the magic # for us. To be completely honest with you, almost all of our Wahoo from May until now have come off schools of bait and tuna along current rips in 400-1000ft.
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.
After three solid hours of battle royale with the tunas, AJs and sharks in 600ft of water, and $150 worth of vertical jigs lost, none of us really cared to give it a shot.
