Remington 700, used. 30-06 = cheapest and very versatile round. Open sights fine at that distance, and plenty of great scopes out there under $200 (see OpticsTalk.com for great advice on scopes and rings). Total rifle price can be less than $500, including scope. There’s a reason the Marines use this action for their sniper rifles (M40x). Plus, born in 1962…like me!

Just bought a second one (1972 BDL model) for $350. My primary hunting rifle is a 1992 700 BDL with Monarch 2.5-10x42 in 30-06. Plastic stock models can be had for less money, but once in a while you find a nice walnut stock BDL for a great price (like the 1972 above).

For that range a shotgun with a slug barrel! They won’t leave the backyard when hit right, with a slug!

Marlin 336

in 30-30.

just call me and you won’t have to purchase a firearm, will help you manage the herd and provide you the meat you want

Ditto on the Marlin 336 3030 or call me and I will provide you with all the meat, I love to hunt/shoot.

Going to Church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

You are the offspring of 5 monkeys having But Secs with a retarded fish squirrel. CONGRADULATION!!!

BSB98, are you in the Hanahan city limits? If you are I’ll bet they have a law that you can’t shoot a gun or hunt! Summerville, has a law against firing a gun within the city limits. Bet, Hanahan does too! You might have to go with a cross bow!

30-30 is a great short-medium distance cartridge for small to medium game. 30-06 will cover your back yard and almost anywhere else you will hunt out to 500 yards, with 50% more energy at 100 yards and 100% more energy at 300 yards than the very best 30-30 made today. But Marlins are sure purty.

Ji a 3030 would do the job very nicely. Why go all Rambo? He said 50 to 75 yards, that is a 3030 shot all day long, with some to spare. 3030 and 30-06 are the same caliber The “.30” in both is the cartridge’s bullet diameter (.308 inches). The “06” in .30-06 stands for 1906, the year in which the cartridge was adopted by the US Army. The “30” in .30-30 refers to the original standard load of 30 grains of powder.
But if you want to go all out and pop the deer with little noise (head shot) pop it with a .17 HMR or a 22 mag. Both are legal on Private land.

http://www.dnr.sc.gov/wildlife/deer/faqsdeer.html

State laws and regulations prohibit the hunting of deer with .22 rimfire rifles or smaller on all WMAs. There are no caliber restrictions on private land. However, a .22 rimfire rifle is inadequate to harvest deer and can result in wounding or unrecovered deer. RESPECT for the animal hunted should always be a common sense guide for ethical hunters. Use only a weapon that allows the animal to be cleanly harvested. Generally speaking, a .243 or 6mm is the smallest caliber normally recommended for deer.

Rambo would bring at least a grenade launcher, or kill it with a spear he made from a stick and his knife.

My recommendation was based on his statement that he was not much of a hunter. The particular rifle I noted can be had inexpensively. Ammo is plentiful, inexpensive, and runs the gammut from mild to wild. The gun has good resale value and is extremely accurate.

Would never recommend a head shot on deer to anyone who is not a really good shot, as a near miss means a deer running around without a lower jaw to starve.

While 30-30 has been a great round since 1895, the -06 provides a much wider range of options. And if he ever decides to hunt anythin

30-30 win, anyone will do 170 grain soft point bullet.

Local Boy, Just having fun.

Ya’ll are going to get this boy put in jail shootin a 30 cal in the city limits. I don’t care what you say about shootin on private land, if there is a law against it somebody is going to call the cops

I have no idea where BSB98 lives and thus cannot know what the laws are there. Just answering his specific question.

BSB98, is it legal to hunt with a rifle where you live?

Cause you can’t still live here, since there isn’t 50-75 yards of “backyard” anywhere around there:

Def a Marlin 30-30. If you want to make it into a longer range rifle (200yds) just shoot Hornady’s LeverEvolution rounds.

Oh yeah, you could always try the sniper routine if there’s questions about shooting in your area. That’s where you open the window and stand back in the room while taking a shot. The barrel should never go out the window releasing the “boom”. It’ll certainly quiet it down outside, but be hella loud inside! Wear plugs!

Yes I know a 17 HMR is very loud inside a bedroom. I know this for a fact.

JI I know what you are talking about, I would never take a head/neck shot that was even questionable. I am a very ethical hunter. And yes a 30-06 is a very nice round and can be gotten cheap, but for anything under 125 yards I would go with the 3030.

Wait until we move the conversation to ghillie suits and suppressors.

haz-r-dous1,

I figure if he’s not much of a hunter, one gun will do. For 30-30 power, just load a Remington managed recoil round in 30-06. Almost exactly the same energy. Once a hunter gets a taste of game, he may up his range beyond the back yard.

Again, though, the Marlin is one sexy rifle. Dad had an ancient octagon barrel 25-20 (Winchester model 1892) that I worshipped as a kid. Marlins look almost as nice. And with the excellent modern ammo, I may have to get one myself!
