The conditions were windy, and if it wasn’t for the contest I would’ve slept in for sure. My buddy Colin came in from Columbia, and he made me man up and do it, and it turned out to be a pretty good day. We sightfished 5 reds between the two of us, but we didn’t manage to figure out trout/flounder fishing.
Dee seemed a little pissed about the turnout, but kayak fishing is definitely still a growing sport. Especially in the Lowcountry. I don’t think I’ve ever seen another yak on the flats in South Carolina in the years I’ve been doin it here. Also, theres a lot of people that would be into it if they ever experienced how sick it can be, but as time goes on the sport will grow and grow - and hopefully Dee and the boys at Haddrell’s will keep putting on this even in years to come.
I’ll post some pics as soon as my buddy uploads them.
Sounds like it was fun. I really wish I could’ve been there. What were the results? Who won what and what were the biggest fish? I hear Stinky Fingers tore it up and had at least one nice red but there was a lack of Flounder and Trout… I hope they do the tourney again and I have already told the wife to not schedule the kids for soccer seasons that will interfere with my fishin again I am away from home so much I can’t pass up days like Saturday with the family, as much as I love fishin and my yak, they have to come first. I hope Dee will keep up the plans and possibly have more tournements…

Cheat? C’mon this ain’t the Redfish tour… Yeah there were some pretty nice prizes but c’mon really??? I liked the idea of a CAR tournement. I haven’t seen a red yet that had the exact same spots and if you really gotta cheat at a local fishing tournament there are some deeper issues there… All fishermen lie… yes we do… that 15" trout will be a 26" Gator before all the beer is gone and that red that broke us off on an oysterbed was at least 42"… but I doubt seriously in my heart that anyone would have cheated at this tourney… I am not saying you are wrong, or that you can’t speak your mind. Just adding my $.02…

How many people fished? I dont like the picture style weigh in…Why? people cheat
Koooray
Kind of hard to cheat with that format. Everyone had a uniform measuring stick, and a “Secret Item” that no one knew about until the captains meeting. The hard part was getting the fish on the ruler and then holding it there while you put the trinket in the picture and then tried to get a good pic that showed the whole fish, the numbers on the ruler, and the trinket.
I liked the format. This is the same thing they do at the largest Kayak tourney on the East Coast (down in Jax). I just wish we had some more people show up and fish!

I like to think all people a honest, but over time I’ve learned that there will always be a few exaggerators in the crowed, even I’m guilty every now and then. So, the camera help keep the honest man honest.
With that said, there has to be a better way. The picture taking was by far the hardest part of the tournament. It was very hard to get everything lined up and I found it a bit time consuming. Also, it damaged the fish. One example, I release one of my trout and it just sank to the bottom. Poor guy didn’t stand a chance. Maybe next time we can draw random partners and have the fish size verified by the fishing partner.

Throws yellow flag! Foul! YOu stole my recommendation from Saturday Night!!!.. Fie on thee!
Seriously, that is what I am looking at setting up for BARF on November 10th…
DD- I was surf-fishing/camping Capers Sat. and surfing Folly Sunday. Figured I would prob. be yak-fishing alone anyway and save the gas money driving to Chas. twice. Really like what you are doing with the tournament, just wish there was a bit more comradre. I think it would be more fun if we were all in the same general location (doesn’t matter where). It’s not about prizes or money, wish all entry fees would go to a good charity and only bragging rights/ picture given out.
Hope to see all of you at Hunting island.
Yeah…I didn’t see the photo process being such a pain in the a$$ either. Maybe they should re-classify the format to “Catch-Kill While Photographing-And Release Dead or Dieing“??? I was lucky all my fish swam off.
Here’s rig the I put together for the tourny, got lucky it already had a DNR sticker on it.
Here’s what the photos looked like with 2 people, one holding the fish, the other taking the photo.
Here’s the “fine job” I did by myself, by the way a head photo AND a tale photo don’t count it has to be a whole fish then a close up of the tail. It was hard to see the camera’s display in the sun light to see what was taken.
How the hell are you suppose to hold the fish, pinch the tale AND pop the photo???
Here’s one more of a 27 3/4 incher…notice the “rod-count” for the tourny, I learned a thing or two about rod management in a kayak during those 2 days of fishing.
my buddy colin and i both caught 28" fish, and they both came on the same cameras, if i was one of yall i would’ve thought we cheated, but we didn’t, couldn’t be less my style … you can tell they are different fish bc coloring and shape of body … good pics good day good tourney, i didn’t find the pic taking too tough
my fish
colin’s
others…we caught 5 fish between us, but the 28s were the biggest, if the winds were lighter in the AM i would’ve got on my secret school and had a 30+ FOR SURE…next year…
Good pictures and good work on nailing 3rd place in the Reds division.
Those of us in “Pluff-Mud” country were limited to taking our photos while in the kayak, which is what made it a pain in the a$$. I need to get a wider angle camera lens or longer arms…smaller fish are “NOT” an option

unfortunately i had to work that day.could not get leave.sorry i couldnt fish with yall.i hope d doesnt can it for next year.

“you wont know unless you go.”
DD- I was stuck at a soccer tournament with the kids. I really wanted to be there fishing the ville with ya but in my line of work I can’t afford to miss too many soccer games and spend time with the family. Sundays are always better for me Fishin IS my church… I do like the idea of partners to verify the fish, and/or take the pix. Sorry bro. On an up note I do have a CD and some prints for ya… when are you workin next and I’ll swing by…

I was wanting to fish this tourny… but with the Redbone coming up I just couldnt get free.
I fished the Jax tourney this year and it had the same format… it works out well but it is kinda agrivating… I fished the fly-only catagory and not only did the fish have to be on the measuring board with the trinket (which in this case was a set of dog tags) but I had to have my fly rod in the pic as well… but watever, I still had a blast.
Glad to see yall had a good time… lord willing i might try to make it next year.
Fingers…I think you said it best. Our goal should be to increase the popularity of the tournament, not subdivide it. Especially when many of the people “offering advice” on why it was done wrong did not even fish, attend, or support. Bickering will just ensure there won’t be any more tourney’s in the future of the such. hanks to all that supported and fished the event.
SF where is the baby on board sticker? No, after the way my day went I was sure you and YOTF where going to place in the red division.
As for comradre, whould anyone be up for a tourney where we all through 10 dollars into a hat. Winner takes half and the other half goes to the charity of the winner choice. We could try to arrange something like this once a month or quarter. The donations may have the added benefit of spurring some interest in the sport.

Heck yeah, I sure would enter such a tourney.
I think I should have won the Lowcountry Slam though, after all, us men have been telling women that actually only 4" is actually 6"!
Thus my 11" Flounder would be closer to 17" using the same math…
