I was stationed in Florida and fishing kept me sane and I feel as if it’s been too long since i’ve gotten my lines wet, new to Charleston and new to this forum but it seems like a close community which I like. I know it’s alot slower after a storm or so I’ve read, but I promised myself i’d go this weekend. I am no master fisherman so i’ll enjoy any tips, I open ears. Thanks all.
I have yet to decide honestly, I watched that live cam of folly and could see a lot of breaks in the sand bar but who knows if they’ll be there tomorrow. Any ideas of where to go?
Kore there is a monthly tournament at the Folly Peir tomorrow . King of the Peir will be there he’ll show you the ropes for the Peir anyway. Fishing might be slow but drum should be there in the am. Peir record flounder caught out there this week.
any of the mentioned places should be ok to try the surf for the 1st time. as for folly lighthouse the rocks near the dropoff are evil! not long ago i fought something (never saw it) for half an hour but it cut me on the rocks right as i could see my leader. it hit a 10-12" mullet so either a shark or giant ray. what part of florida you from? im going to be moving to kings bay, ga in a short time you from around there at all? after talking to my dads uncle that lives in fernandina and seeing some stuff hes caught/seen caught i now have a new goal for myself: nab a tarpon
Well gentlemen as soon as I saw the sun I left the house a little prematurely. I can say I’ve “Fished” for the first time in Charleston today. I used frozen shad rather then live bait because the water was so murky from the storm, I figured they had a better chance smelling my bait then seeing it. I tried to go to brittle bank but the pier was closed due to fireworks… at 3. I was told about the batteries so I went there, I caught one trout from mostly fed the crabs. I walked up and down the batteries but no luck. But i’m not upset, day ended up gorgeous.
JaGads- Just about everyone has recommended that lighthouse inlet, i’m definitely going to have to take a look. How far is the nearest parking lot from there, just considering how light I want to pack.
dsnave- I’ve been to folly but never the pier does it tend to be packed?
OhioNavyNuke- I originally from Kentucky, but I was stationed at Naval Air Station Pensacola. The Air Forces sheet metal school is located there. Pensacola was great, I fished everyday. I was there during the winter so reds were in abundance in the surf.
On tournament days it usually is… But not to bad during weekend usually get there early and grab a spot. Weekdays are great just need to find someone to net the fish for you.
I think the walk is around a quarter mile, maybe more. There is free parking at the end of the road as long as you get there early or are lucky. Then you can either walk out to the channel by way of the closed down road or cut over to the beach and get to the channel. Once down there you can go from channel to beach front by way of a short hop over a wooden groin. Figuring out the tides/channel/sandbars can be tricky out there, but once you figure it out it is good fishing. Use google earth to take a look at it all before hand.
I will probably be fishing Sunday, I tend to target sharks more often than anything, but I always have rigs in the water that catch big reds too I live on folly and am always looking for people to fish with.
Hey again all, just thought I drop some info about today’s trip. I went 11am-9pm to the lighthouse inlet everyone recommended, I took live mud minnows and frozen shrimp. I fished that obtuse angle of a rock wall just right as you get on the beach. I caught 3 lady fish or so I believe that’s what they were, I let them go because I couldn’t really identify them and the DNR sheet I had didn’t have any info on them. What’s the word on them can you keep them? Are they edible? But besides that not much luck at all. A slow day, but a gorgeous one at that.
Stanjwarren- I’m definitley interested in a fishing buddy, I’d love to catch a shark or a bull red with you some time.
