Went fishing yesterday and managed a slot Red, another 13 inch Bluefish on a live bait float rig. The very large stingray that was being a nuisance on my last trip was back and being a pest again. It would not go away. I was concerned that it was spooking away any Reds or Sheepshead around my bottom lines. I even poked it’s back with the end of my fishing pole and that did not seem to bother it. I’m suspicious that someone at some point may have fed it which is the last thing I would do as it would never go away. This ever happen to anyone, and how did they get the ray to go away?
Save some money! You have bait coming to you:smiley:
where is that ray hanging around at? i need some more shark bait. i would gladly remove this pest for you

Rays won’t spook the fish. They are a fish too. Pretty cool fish really.

Maybe it smells whatever is in your bait bucket…
If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
Had live menhaden in the bucket. Ray did not show today. The blues were in force. Brought up what looks like a Gar. Will post a pic of the Gar after I get done fileting the Blues. Gonna smoke them tomorrow.
Rays are always a good sign. Where Rays go the Reds go!

I had a ray slightly smaller than this one swim right up to me on the surface a long ago while trying to catch mullet. I was in about 3ft of water calf deep in pluff mud. Scared the daylights out of me!

I’d be hinky too if anything with a stinger came up to me, whether it had fins or wings.
A sting ray will never hurt you while swimming, unless you step on it or do something really stupid with it. Then it might or might not. Almost every sting I’ve ever had came while trying to get the hook out of their mouth. They are docile creatures.

Just don’t approach them from behind when swimming as Steve Irwin unfortunately found out. I guess the best policy is try not to appear as a predator (or victim) to them.
Got hit in the hand by one a couple years back while unhooking. Wasn’t to bad at first and tried to keep fishing, until the pain migrated all the way to the top of my arm.
Fella fishing with me called his daughter at hospital and she said to put hot water on the wound. WOW, all the pain went away. Just had to keep some heat on it for about an hour or it would slowly come back.
Thankfully, it was a quick and simple remedy, cause that chit hurt!!

Those SOBs do hurt something awful fierce, and it only takes the slightest prick to do it. I’ve been snake bit and it hurt less than a little ray can hurt you. The little ones flopping are the most dangerous to handle. In the water, no problem. Shuffle your feet when wading anywhere. We call it doing the stingray shuffle. They will only get you by accident, they don’t have an attack mode like a shark.
