Help with Pier setup

I was planning on doing some pier fishing next week & hope to catch some larger fish.
What kind of tackle set up are you guys using & what kind of net are you using to get them out of the water & onto the pier?
Any help would be great.

Tackle depends on what your fishing for. There are drop nets there to bring your fish up.

Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.

I generally run 7 foot medium and medium heavy rods with 3000 or 4000 series reels for sheepshead. 20 lb mono but I’m going to switch to 30 lb braid. Carolina rig with 1/2 to 1 oz weight, #1 octopus hook on a 20 lb Floro leader

At the folly pier Most people targeting big bottom fish go with heavy gear. There are 3 main big fish you will catch, stingrays, sharks, and reds with sharks being the most common. 50 to 100lb braid to a mono leader is common. Some people use 60lb mono some use up to 300lb. The heavy mono will prevent bite offs from sharks and break offs on pilings. Its mostly preference. You need heavier gear so you can muscle the big fish around the pilings. You can land them on lighter gear but its worse for the fish and on your gear and you will p.o. everyone when it tangles them up because your gear doesnt have the power to control the fish. You will loose a lot more tackle and put a lot of stress on smaller tackle. Ive watched people break off 10 times in a row because of to light of gear. Follow your fish so your always in line witn it. If it goes left go left until your in line with it. You will likely have to go over and under lines this is known as the pier shuffle. You always want to be straight up and down when you go to net them. Where the head goes the fish follows, lead its head to the net. Ive seen people kill fish from taking to long to net and take pictures. If someone trys to help you let them, there is almost always someone with experience and knowledge out there. Most importantly respect the fish dont just chunk a big red over the rail. Let it down easy in tbe net and revive it some and when its looms ready to swim out the net let it and just as its about half way out lift the net so it lifts the tail and points the head down. This is the best technique for a pier release. Remember this is a public fishing spot and everyone has the same right to it so be respectful of others and their space and gear.

What i use:
I use 7 to 12ft rods with 6500 to 8000 size reels and 65lb to 80lb braid and a 20ft topshot of 150lb mono fg knotted to my braid and i use a carolina, knocker, or lupton rig with a good size circle hook. There is supposed to be a 4/0 hook rule but dnr recommends bigger circle

A lot of great info there guys. I have fished piers before but only caught spanish & small trash fish. I knew the big boys would need larger gear but would not have figured that big. Thanks for the help, now I can go more prepared.

Can we please not give the advice for people to target protected fish from the pier? Already see enough dead fish “released” out there, rather not see more.

I think that is why they gave additional advice on how to release a larger fish.

Doesn’t DNR publish recommendations on rigging for reds?

Yeah, just move up to the North end by the lighthouse…Red Drum aren’t protected up there [:I].

Redfish are south carolinas number 1 sport fish and our greatest fishery. Its common sense that catch and release works when done properly, look at any tagging program and at the largemouth bass fishery. In North Carolina there dnr gives you a citation for big catches which is like a award anglers try to achieve. Ive caught 9 or 10 and released about 60 to 80 so far this year without a single floater. The only dead red ive seen at the pier was a half eaten 1 by a dolphin.

Catch and release is catch and release.

All fishing is the same. A hook, a line, a bait and a fish. Its legal to fish for them check the dnr.

Im a stingray fisherman.

Edited as my joke came off as insensitive. Me so sorry.

Exactly why i didnt go on the Mad Surf event this year… Your real nice face to face but say cheap stuff online… Classy, your a stud.

Great job trying to make a mockery out of real life issues. It shows your stance on these type of issues. Clearly not biased at all .

You totally misunderstood that post. I wasn’t trying to be insensitive or racist at all. My thoughts were the pier is for “all” to enjoy. I will pull it seeing how it is being misinterpreted and viewed as insensitive to your Native American heritage. As that was not my intention. I’m sorry if you saw it that way. I have always considered you as a friend. I assure you I was not intending disrespect to you. It is something you should be proud of. Regarding my personal stance. I believe all should be treated equally. Nothing less. I hope we can get out and fish again and it doesn’t have to with MAD. PM me anytime. I have nothing against you and have gone to bat for you several times, you know that. It was just a few day’s ago in the thread with Jack that I stated something about you being treated unfairly because of who you are. Why would I turn around and do the opposite. You misunderstood me. Not everyone is out to get you, not everyone is a racist. I get why your skeptical, but I am not that guy. Hope we can still be friends.

40 I take issue , not in the mis-interpetation of this issue but in the fact you use it to punish the troops by not participating in the MAD event , I thought you were bigger than that ; guess I figured wrong.
I know Pete and i’m sure that was not his intent!:smiley:

Things are easily misinterpreted with this online stuff:smiley:I hope he understands that wasn’t my intension. I hope he accepts my apology, and I will be more clear with my posts. I could see how he thought I was screwing with him. I didn’t realize I was so nice in person, but such a **** online. 40 reread the Edisto surf fishing post. It will give you more insight as to how I feel.

I like you better in person as well…ONLY when you take me fishing :stuck_out_tongue:!

…bless your heart.

(I heard say that supposed to make it sound better.)

Plus I missed the bad joke.

At least the third time minimum you posted something disrespectful toward me or mocking something i said in like the last year or so. Joke or not. I let the first 1 go because there was enough bs on the thread already and thought well pete seemed decent in person hes just following the crowd. It was something about me getting suicide by cops. Second time i didnt want to make it a big deal because i get lynch mobbed if i tell someone the proper way to catch and release a red. Now its i better put him on the spot so hes aware of his actions before he makes to much of a habit out of it or really crosses a line.

The reason for not going to the Mad event is if someone says something about or toward me im gonna have words with them. It would of been drama. Im not bringing drama to that kind of event.

Well thank you for sparing us the drama:smiley: Feel free to PM me and sock it to me real good if it makes you feel better. Enough of this nonsense, you ready to go fishing? Only a few weeks left:wink:

Dammit, I missed it.
