Linebacker Ernest Hawkins no longer with Gamecocks -

Junior linebacker Ernest Hawkins has left the South Carolina football team. He is expected to transfer.

The 6-foot-1, 224-pound Hawkins, from Baltimore, Md., had one tackle in six games in 2015, his only season as a Gamecock.

Hawkins originally signed with UTEP in 2012 and was set to grayshirt and enroll the following January. He backed away from those plans after the UTEP coaching staff was let go. He was out of football for two years and joined USC after one season at Hartnell College in Salinas, Calif.

Hawkins is the fourth player to leave the team this month, joining defensive end David Johnson, cornerback Al Harris Jr. and wide receiver Shaq Davidson.

With their departures, the Gamecocks project to be right at the 85-scholarship mark for the 2016 season.

Is Boom forcing guys out that sos had given scholarships to?

I wouldn’t say forcing, not every player will get along with the new coaches. The player in that article already has that track record going for him. Should Boom keep players around that won’t get motivated to work our in the off season? Players that obviously need improvement? Since SOS gave them a scholly they should get a pass to be bad apples on the team?

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

Don’t know? Good questions. That’s why I asked. It’s definitely a biz, with tough decisions to make in order to get results. I guess I was wondering what Clemzon would do in the same situation. Not sayn, just wondering.

But I knew you would be proud something was posted about the yard chickens

This happens with most teams when there is a change in coaching staff. I would assume Clemson would do the same thing. Hawkins was brought in as a stop gap on a terrible defensive recruiting class. The linebackers at South Carolina are actually really good and he would not have seen the field anyway.

Kid from wando that played QB back in the day was on the clemson team until Bowden showed up. Bye Bye Wando kid. So I would say Clemon does the same thing when new coaches show up.

I didn’t know the term grayshirt; feel free to make fun of me.

“Non scholarship athlete waits an extra semester to become a full-time student and part of the team.”

If I get murdered in the city, don’t go revenging in my name…

It is used more than most realize. it is a redshirt for non-scholarship player.

Bama has been doing it for years. Maybe they are on to something.

Is that like when McKissick would hold back the 7th and 8th graders?

I believe with Clemson’s last HFBC hire, we lost all but 5 of our good recruits and we read countless threads here about how the receivers coach wasn’t as good of a recruiter as we all said and he would be the end of the program…

Just sayin.

But SC hired the HBC, so they won that war of words. And they could say things like that. Then they had the 5 bomb, and well, then they had the 5 bomb, and a banner
