HHI fishing, newbe to SC

Heading down for the week from yankeeland and was wondering if I could get some tips/pointers for a few access points on the Island.

We are staying 2nd street back from the beach near Chaplin Park. I notice on the satellite there is a little creek there and out on the beach, a nice cut on the beach front. Are there crabs in this little creek; looks like there is a culvert or little bridge over it on the access path to the beach. Is the fishing decent at this cut? Is it a deep cut where sharks might hang out on the tide changes?

Where is a decent, accessible place to take the kids (6/7) crabbing?

Are there any bait shops on the island? I am taking my cast net but if my scouting for fresh bait doesn’t work out, I may need to rely on frozen or fresh dead for the beginning of the week. Is there any place to rent a kayak?

Can you wade fish anywhere close by or is it too dangerous? I spent several years fishing the surf/bays/gulf on the Texas coast so I have the gear.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Also, any recommendations for a good, kid friendly guide for a 4 hr trip inshore, preferably a close drive on the island but if it isn’t too far away, I can make a drive.

You can wade/surf fish anywhere on the beach front, unless you are worried about sharks, which there is plenty of. They usually don’t bite the locals, not sure about Yanks  Anywhere there is a sand bottom is generally safe to wade. Don’t even try it in black mud creeks.

Yes, several bait shops on the island, also seafood markets which are better than bait shops for fresh dead bait.

Yes, several kayak rental places too.

Be aware that it is illegal to “shark” fish from Hilton Head beaches. The sight of them scares off the tourists:wink: See http://www.hiltonheadislandsc.gov/ourisland/beachregs.cfm
