I’m not a great surf fisherman but will be down in HHI this upcoming week so I’m planning on spending some time on the beach messing around with it hoping to learn.
Can any of you folks give me some basic guidance? Bait to use? Size of hook? Tide to fish? In the breakers or outside the breakers? Basic area (not looking for anybody’s spot)?
Also, are there any good tackle shops in Hilton Head?
Thanks for any info you guys can give me.
Just past Moss Creek entrance (towards HHI) on the same side of the road is Southern Drawl. They have bait and tackle and good information. I’m a decent fish catcher, not such a great fish finder, but here is my advice: I’d get 1/0 or 2/0 circle hooks and start out with cut mullet. Take along some dead shrimp too. I usually just buy these at the seafood counter at Kroger near Palmetto Dunes.
I usually surf fish at sunrise, just because I love being on the beach at that time. Watching the sun come up on the beach with a cup of coffee and a line in the water equals a great morning whether I catch anything or not. I’m sure some tides are better than others, but I don’t pay much attention to them when I fish the surf.
If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

You’re welcome. Be sure to check the Surf Fishing forum on this site too. Lots of good information from people that know more than me.

I fish a double hook 4/0 circle hook on a 50 lb leader. Cut mullet and shrimp. If you keep losing bait, switch to 2/0 circle hooks. Go at low tide and look for troughs, depressions on the beach. Fish in the depressions as the tide rises. Knee deep water will hold fish so put the bait in the troughs, not as far as you can cast. Biggest thing is walking to find a good trough. Look near inlets.

With all the tide and wind this week might need a lot of lead!
