Maybe they don’t know what fish they regulate, they asked about skipjacks also.
They do regulate skipjack…not blackfin though…maybe they are going to start now…
They just asking about tuna or all HMS fish?
I called the number on the letter, gave them the reference number and they did the survey on the spot. They ask mainly about “Tunas, Billfish, Swordfish and Sharks”, how many trips, what port, etc. simple questions. When she finished, I asked about the purpose of the survey and if it would help our Yellowfin population. She said she thought the main purpose was concerned with Docks and marinas.
Go figure.

never got the letter but got the call yesterday. sorry nothing to report but sharks

It was funny. I told her about the sharpnose sharks. She was interested until I said none kept. She didn’t ask if they were alive when released. 2 sails released and then she asked about tunas. I asked her what they looked like…
Bring on the 2-3 chop!
I never got a phone call. But I did catch a 25 Whaler with twin 225 Mercury’s with three SC DNR officers on board. They hit the port out rigger when they came zooming up to my boat about 3 miles east of Comanche. Lost my favorite red/white islander on the prop. Then they proceeded to run along side again and announce that they were doing a survey for the NMFS almost impaling themselves on my port outrigger. I did not mind cooperating but don’t they teach those %#@& to use the radio!
So I sent the DNR a letter asking that they pay for my equipment: 1 islander lure, 1 stainless steel hook, 1 ball bearing swivel. $29.50 total. Ha, fat chance. Called them back and they said there’s a budget crunch on right now. Don’t call us we’ll call you.
If your not fishin your not livin!
Got my call at 8pm last night. She did seem most interested in ports. Maybe the Feds are planning their vacations for next year and want to stay close to our marinas and ramps.
If you’re lucky enough to live at the beach, you’re lucky enough.
got the call yesterday, a big old waiste of 15 minutes if you ask me. i told the truth, and basically said the tuna just never came in, but the billfishing is about status quo. the interviewer not only had no clue about what she was asking but i am not too sure if she passed the fifth grade because i had to correct her pernunciation (sp)of many basic words. get out some wire line and treble hooks, i found you can rig about 5 makeral rigs made up by the time the phone interview is complete.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

quote:I think that you are misinformed. Tuna catches have been poor up there this year as well. They have caught a few, but many of the charter boats went for months without seeing them and several captains agreed that it was the "worst tuna fishing they have ever seen" this year... I should add that there have been a few caught lately, but I think that "having a ball" on them this year might be a bit of an overstatement.

Of course not. Most surveys nowadays are handled by third party services given a list of questions and instructed to record the answer. We are probably lucky that they at least employed a contractor in the USA.
Got my phonecall the other day. Same old stuff. What did you catch how many did you target any of these species how many did you catch. How often do you fish bla bla. Wish I could have said we caught more but had to be honest
Rofield:smiley: just in case
They finally called me back today. I thought that the survey was pretty fair. I just hope that we get to see the results. Also, I am glad to see them finally spending a little money to get a survey done. It’s hard to justify paying them permit money every year that disappears into a black hole.
Finally got the call, glad to see them using our fees for something productive, can’t wait to see the results.

You may be right that the tuna count is down in NC this year …
all i meant were they are catching some which is much better than here in SC waters at least they are getting a sniff. down year is all we can hope for… My trip to key largo was a bust wrong time of year for there - i knew that but annivessary trip and my wife loves it there. I got the survey call as well but all i could tell them was my HMS permit was a waste of money this year. Maybe i’ll use it on blues in NC this winter. I’m gona try kings this weekend just to bend a rod.

The survey calls come from a 614 area code.
I was surprised, she left a voice mail as I was at work and did not answer. I couldn’t help but laugh once I listen to the message…
She couldn’t even speak enough english to leave me an understandable voice mail.
They should have done an online survey instead. Would have been much easier.
Got my phone call this am. Called them back pm. Girl did not speak very good English. Did offer the choice of doing an online survey in future years!!
I joined the club tonight too. The guy I talked to must have been hired right off the street - literally. They must be paying him with beers. He could barely put two words together… I was honest and went through my trip log with him. I think he was more interested in knowing who I sold my previous boat to…???
