hodge podge of species

tried the beach again where ive been catching sharks from the yak with a few friends and caught probably the biggest variety of species ive seen in a while. i started walking the river channel to see if i could stick a flounder and eventually spotted an eye glint in my spotlight that started to move after i figured out what it was. tried to gig it and got a marginal hit, but it was a big butterfly ray that had no problem flopping off after a few seconds. never saw any flatties but i had plenty of finger mullet and started beach fishing. maybe 10 minutes in and i pull in a 17 inch trout. 20 minutes later my rod goes off again and get a cutoff on a finger mullet. took a bit before the next hits, but my friends rod went off hard and then mine maybe 5 seconds later. i got cut again, but he had his and of all things 50 yards from the sand in comes a nice spanish! id imagine that would be the culprit that cut my line before too. bit later more rods go off and in comes a 26" and then a small redfish. we hit a lull in the action for a bit so i went out in the yak for sharks but very little bait and even after several passes through the 1 decent school around, no runs and i go back to see another friend in shallower water having caught a baby hammerhead, sail cat, and whiting. not long after i get set up again in comes 1 of the flounder i never found. shortly after that one of my friends got a big pinfish too. the beach started to get crowded so we were thinking about leaving as a rod starts peeling and nearly gets yanked in from the sand spike. thought it was a big redfish, but in comes a jack crevalle. right as im about to take my rod in it starts bouncing and after switching to a light steel leader i pull in a spaniard as well. several fish between 4 people and very little of 2 of the same kind caught!

oh yea…caught a baby spadefish in the cast net the night before too

Very cool report man, looks like you guys crushed it out there. Haven’t been to the Folly area for 3 weeks now and have been trying my luck inshore. Can’t wait for Fall, keep the reports coming!

definitely a fun outing! all carcasses will be paddled out as shark bait in the future, especially the jack and the spaniards. heard both sides of the story (trash and not bad) for jack crevalle so i threw a small piece in foil with a spanish fillet with blackening seasoning and threw it on the grill at high temp and really it wasnt bad at all all least cut right off the fish and rinsed out. anyone actually eat those things?

That is a heck of a report. And much appreciated.

What was the time/tide period? Promise, I ain’t looking for your spot(s).

got there nice and early in the morning before sunup and low tide was 825. we fished til 1130 or so.
