Home defense setup?

Primary: Two lab mix dogs that hang out in the front yard all day visible to whomever may be driving around “surveying” opportunities.

Secondary: Gen3 G19 w/ Streamlight TLR-3

My biggest concern is if I ever had to use my secondary inside my home. I currently am loaded with 115gr +p jhp from Magtech. Having children in the house and neighbors on both sides I want to do what I can to limit how far a round will penetrate if it hits an interior wall. Not firing at all is the safest thing, for sure. Any suggestions on ammo?

Don’t miss

home defense…NOTHING beats a pistol grip shotgun with an 18" barrel loaded with birdshot! point in the general area and boom! will not kill your neighbors or kids in the next room, and simple for a non shooter to be taught to use, plus the sound of chambering a round will make an intruder piss his pants.

Buy a Remington 870 express 12 gauge. They cost less than $300 and are one of the best shotguns ever made. It is the top selling shotgun of all time. Birdshot Birdshot Birdshot. As far as guard dogs go…Any dog will succumb to a big piece of raw meat. Don’t depend on them for guard duty. They are a good early warning , though.

Yeah, forgot I also have a Stevens 320 pistol grip with 18.5" barrel. Heard just as many bad reviews as good reviews, but for the price I couldn’t pass it up. Birdshot is all I’ve eer put through it and it cycles just fine. Boom.

I keep a 12ga 870 loaded on gun rack in my room with the chamber open. Right now I have #1 or #2 steel shot. Bought some to shoot some geese but trip got canceled. So now its home defense!
Although my dads talked about buying a used cheap shotgun like a Mossberg 300 and sawing it off and gettin a pistol grip for the house

Most people are all “wigged” out over law enforcement using hollowpoint ammo. The truth is that most hollowpoint ammo will expend most of it’s energy inside the body and not as likely to over penetrate (shoot through the bad guy). A missed shot will go through several walls though.

Going through walls is what I would worry about the most with my G19. I figure std stuff like Winchester white box (non-hp) would be more apt to penetrate several walls than would be a hp round. I like Capt Larry’s suggestion of safety slugs. Sells is right that nothing announces your intentions like racking a 12ga…

I’ve also heard this as a “no-no” but what’s the problem with a couple of the CCI birdshot rounds in the top of the mag followed by 13 hp’s?

I have 3 bird shot followed by 2 buck shot in my Remington 870. Figured if they didn't get the message with bird shot...the buck shot would make the message louder and clearer. Also have 40 caliber pistol for backup plan. I am not getting punked in my own house

I will never announce myself to an intruder. I want to surprise him not him surprise me. If I have to rack a round it might be too late

Tough talk…I hope you never have to walk a mile in my shoes as one who has shot and killed someone! There is nothing cool or macho about killing another human being, especially over a property crime. It is one of the worst feelings in the world when you see someone dying, and you know that you did it. It was a clean shoot, but that doesn’t make it any easier to live with. I still would not hesitate to do it again if my family or myself was in mortal danger. But I see nothing wrong with racking a round and listening to them haul @ss out of the building.

Wise words right there… +2.

Turkey… the other white meat.

I never said I would in any way enjoy killing someone, but if it ever comes down to it I don’t want to take any chances. The safety of my family is more important than that. I too would feel horrible, no doubt about it.

There are safer ways to announce your intentions than trying to chamber a round in the middle of the night and risk being nervous and jamming the gun.

I can’t speak for Sellsfish, tigerfin, but it does seem at times that some posters glamorize the situation of possibly having an intruder walk in the door and commence to engage in home protection.

I can only imagine that anyone would have the hair raise on the back of their neck, not just in anger that someone is in their house, but in fear… and anyone that denies that, well, you wmight be on Obama’s hitlist for the next psych eval and the taking of your firearms.

I don’t want to be in that position, nor do I ever want to have to be, but if I am, I will worry about who I am pointing my home defense at and just how either one of us will come out of it.

I love the Streamlight on my G19. It’s bright enough to leave you seeing a pretty big spot for a while. I don’t ever want to have to draw down on someone, but if its dark I want to know who or what I’m drawing down on. Thanks for the replies.

Because you won't kill him with birdshot and in today's America you are likely to get sued by putting birdshot in someone. I know it's messed up, but I wouldn't put anything past today's lawyers...

No sir, I surely don’t and hate that you had to go through that. However, I’ll never give a criminal the benefit of the doubt or semblance of a warning if they are in my home and a threat to my wife an children.

And I’d prefer a load of high brass #5’s or maybe a load of #4 heavi-shot. A handgun has one purpose, to buy you time to get to a long-gun.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.
