everyone should note that high stress situations cause ones body to not function as smoothly as being confortable shooting around on the range. your weapon of choice is generally not sitting on your hip <or on top the bedside table, at least mine isnt, i have an 8 yo boy who has an infatuation>. many endorphins -adrenaline- will be dumped into your body and is extremely hard to control fine motor function. just locating and getting a firm purchase on the grip may be difficult. much less if you require eye glasses, that could take several seconds! then the mental aspect…depending on the situation…was it that an intruder? did the little one get up go to the bathroom and stumble? one will have to go through all this before drawing down his weapon… What would happen to your childs psychi (sp?) if he came running into your room, having woken up from a bad dream, and saw you with a gun pulled?
bottom line is make sure of yourself and the situation!
but if it was the dreaded scenario of an intruder inside your domain, your castle, you have all right in the world to protect it.
BUT DONT MISS! the reality is that dead men tell no tales.this is the reason silhouette targets have the 10x ring in the middle…AIM CENTER MASS! it is far easier to defend your actions when there is not someone to argue the other side. and if it is just an injury, you WILL BE sued, by the exact same perp who broke into your house threatenning your family’s security. by any means necessary, do not let him get away, and immediately call the police stating what has happened. make notes of exact details… over time and under questioning things may get forgotten or details left out that could be vitally important. keep all witnesses at the scene! when the authorities arrive, DO NOT APPEAR TO THEM AS A THREAT! theyre coming into an extremely volitile situation and you do no want to be interpretted as an aggressor!
to the point of what weapon is best? THE ONE YOU ARE MOST PROFICIENT WITH! spend the time and money on training y
Also for those who think that the 5 round shotgun is the end-all-be all, don’t forget that society is pretty fragile nowadays. One major disaster, and you might be looking at a gang of 6-8 thugs walking around door to door to do some looting. Hope you can reload fast!!! Each gun is a tool. Use the right one for the job…
Why, lookie here…
Just say you missed a shot on each one of these guys, yet tagged them with the second. Assumming that you were not lining hogs up at the corn pile and able to take out two with one shot, that would mean that at least 8 rounds would be needed to take care of the assailants.
Skinnee has a very good point here. Multiple assailants increase your chances of expending multiple rounds per assailant. I don’t want to have to be reaching for clips or more shotshells in the dark of night, under the influence of adrenalin.

Of course I have a good point. That's what I do!
Honestly, guns are like tools and you have to pick the one that is best for the job.
When it comes to bullets… The at&t commercial has it nailed with the question… “Do you want MORE or LESS”? I will likely never be in a gun fight, but if I were, I can honestly say that I would want MORE bullets… I consider myself a great shot, but I have never been under attack before and know that stress would definitely hamper my performance.
That is why I think that “high capacity” magazine arg
quote:Getting my family secure and having a strong defensive position is the primary goal. My belongings can be replaced, the lives of my children and wife cannot. Going on the offensive and seeking out the threat puts everyone in jeopardy. Adopting a strong defensive position allows you to have the upper hand were the situation to arise.
Amen to that, get in a defensible position and make the threat come to you. Then you have every advantage. If it doesn’t come to you, it wasn’t a personal threat. Don’t go after it. The defensive positions should be planned ahead with the whole family.
This has been an interesting conversation. People seem inclined to limit themselves to a handgun, or a long gun, or maybe both for home defense. They keep a handgun by the bed and feel safe at night. To me the best weapon is the one I have close to hand when and where I need it, so I keep plenty scattered around They might not all be the best choice, but they will give me time to fight my way to a better one.
Consider the possibilities. Intruders don’t just attack when you are asleep. What if you are cooking supper when the door breaks down and your handgun is by your bed? What if you are doing the laundry? What if you are upstairs reading the grand kid a bedtime story? What if you are sitting on the porcelain throne or taking a shower? Can you defend your household from the shower with big jim hanging free? How about while you are working in the garage or shop? One thing I’ve learned about trouble is it usually comes when and where you least expect it.

I'm not sure that I understand your necessity to choose one and only one gun. I would have many guns at my disposal, but a handgun would definitely be on my belt.
I would choose a long gun for combat out of my window for sure, but despite what you choose, I am still not sleeping with a tactical shotgun under my pillow.

Who said I’d choose one and only one gun? I never said that. I said that a handgun is for fighting to a position to bring the long gun into play. I have oodles of handguns and would have a hard time deciding which ones to have with the impending/hypothetical apocalypse. Certainly the 1911s, definitely a revolver or three and I really like the XDM I picked up. Then there is the old reliable and never failing 92/96 combo I have. The AR would be for volume, shotgun close work but I’d rather work at a distance if possible.
It’s all how you look at it. Remember the line from Quigley Down Under; “Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn’t know how to use one.”

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Any suggestions on ammo?
frangible or at least hollow point rounds if you must use a pistol or rifle, but target loads from a shotgun are going to have less over-penetration
the only gun that’s consistently within my reach, is my carry pistol. my rifles & shotguns stay in the safe so:
ideally, i’ll put 2 center of mass from the ar15 if the bad guy’s unlucky enough to stop by while i’m cleaning guns. and yes, i keep ammo, loaded mags in fact, in the same room as the gun i’m cleaning [:0] perhaps, i’ll be lucky enough to have my G26 within reach. more likely though, i’ll be lying in wait going for the bad guys vitals w/ my pocket knife if they haven’t already gotten the jump on me
i’m sure not going searching for a bad guy even if i have my ar15 and/or glock. i’ll post up behind the nearest cover, & be silent, visually identify target, & if necessary, put them down with extreme prejudice.
i’m definitely not going to verbally warn them & give away my position. “i feared for my life & defended myself” is going to be the answer to every question i’m asked afterwards too
I try to plan for several different scenarios and have different means of self defense pretty much throughout the house. I as well as both of my sons practice every 2 weeks at the range with a variety of guns and my wife has even gotten pretty good with more than one type of gun. I had to lie to her and tell her that there were not pink grips available for my XD9.
Like the addage says, plan for the worst and pray for the best. The biggest piece of advise I can give anyone is no matter what type of gun you choose, practice, practice, practice. The most effective weapon is the one you’re comfortable and experienced with.
Castle Doctrine = Castle laws, remove the duty to retreat before using deadly force, when one is in their home or vehicle, in some US States just simply where one can legally be, which is the case for SC.
Stand your ground = One can use deadly force in any location one is legally allowed to be , without first attempting to retreat. Such laws remove the requirement that the threat must occuron one’s property, this goes for SC as well.
Better to be judged by 12, then be carried by 6, that’s the God’s honest truth, know that.
