Hot Summer Days

Well the month of August is upon us and most of us are just waiting for the fall to come so we can get a break from the heat, but as this past weekend has shown, there are some great bottom fishing opportunities this time of year. There were some nice fish caught from 70’ on out to 180’ and the variety of good eating fish was, well, quite a variety. I saw reports of everything from the red snapper everyone was targeting to African pompano, that are also quite tasty as well. This weekend will be the second and last opportunity to harvest red snapper for this year and if the weather permits, there will be plenty of people out to pick up a few if they can, but don’t look past all of the other great species to target once this weekend is over. Our bottom fishing here in the Lowcountry offers a year round opportunity to catch a great variety of good eating bottom dwellers. As with all types of fishing, please just make sure you know how to identify what you are catching to keep you within the limits on each species, but also from a safety standpoint of understanding the fish your are bringing into your boat.
