How did everyone do in the IFA? I came out with a big fat nothing. I threw everything I had in my tackle box and didn’t even get a nibble but I had a great time. Looking forward to Savannah.
No fish.
1st timer and I learned a lot.
Not sure how I feel about FL fish winning it. I just wasn’t
aware of the boundries.

Wait what? I was worn out and didn’t go to the weigh in. You mean to tell me that someone went to Florida and submitted a catch from there?
I got seventh place with a 26" red…couldn’t find a legal-sized trout all day - biggest I managed to catch was 13.75".
The bite was very strong early and died off around 7:30am Caught a small red 22" range and a couple of trout 13-15" nothing big enough to measure.
If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.
J.P you would have been in the money with a 22" red and a 15" trout
Yes winning fish caught in Jacksonville…legal waters open to public…that means they drove here for meeting at 7pm, drove home, fished 2 hrs in morning then drove here to make 3pm check in.
All that driving and still catch quality fish.
I didnt catch anything, I haven’t fished artifical much. I will work it in more for next year.

Who would have thought? There are so many fisherman in Charleston that are way better than me. I’m relatively new to kayak fishing so I fumble around with the measuring board, token etc. I didn’t want the fish out of the water for that long. It was a great time and that’s all that matters to me.
JP tournament days are different than normal fishing. You never know what’s going to be caught or how far people are willing to go to get in the money. The ride to JAX is about 3 hours and the tides were favorable for early morning hitting it hard.
As for you keeping fish out of the water. Good on you for sportsmanship. Things to remember in the future:
keep the fish in the water in your net while you get your stuff in order
put measuring board across your lap and pre stage the token so it;s easily in view.
slide the fish onto the board and snap the pic.
I always have my camera in 3 shot mode " just to be sure"
put the fish BACK IN THE NET in the water
CHeck your pics
if pics are good, release fish healthy.

I stayed up until 1:00 AM finishing my boat. Woke up at 4:30 AM to find tackle etc… Cut off one nice spottail on a rock, and that was that. My brother caught a few.
Anyway, I feel guilty about skipping the weigh in. I like to celebrate the winners, but I was spent. Crashed on the sofa.
I was hoping to make the weigh in as well but I was pretty much in the same situation as eza88 and only had an hour of sleep. I left the house at the same time I usually go to sleep, since I work evening shift. But seriously, I really don’t think going to Florida for a South Carolina sponsored event is in the spirit of this competition and I really don’t know if I am going to be back next year if that rule is still in effect. I may be complaining and there may be others that don’t agree with me. What are your thoughts?
I definitely see your point, John, but I’m sure I’ll keep entering. I like that the IFA puts kayak fishing in a national spot light, and it seems like good people running the show. Getting to the captains’ meeting and weigh in would seem like a reasonable way to set geographic boundaries. I never would have imagined that someone could or would fish in Florida.
Really tried the top water - had a couple of big red blow up’s early and caught a 15 inch trout
Didn’t go to the weigh in - old guy like me took a nap I was worn out fished 3 days in a row

J.P. next measure any combo fish you catch over dnr limits as you would have placed in top 10 . Only six anglers out of 67 caught trout, red combos. 3 of those were in Jacksonville which is within the current rules.
Congrats to DaveJask who represented Charleston with 4 place if I remember right.
We did win a nice Yamaha boaters life jacket size 2xl-3xl in the raffle ( for sale) not sure what to do with it.
Have you got a pic of it Scot? I might be interested.

Dang!My brother had a 15" trout and 19" redfish. He could have paid my entry and Team Biyak would have been on the board.
I didn’t fish this, but heard that 1 through 4 were caught in Jax. They are kinda snickering about it on JKF.com. I am really opposed to those rules. I mean, WTF? Everyone knows the trout fishery in Jax is way better than here. Hell, I’d be tempted to do the same next year if I were all of you. Interested to hear your thoughts, particularly those that fish these tourneys a lot. Is this par for the course??

even though it is “within the rules” it is pure horse crap… Why are they even having the event here if people are fishing Florida… IFA needs to rethink this…

I have already sent a letter to IFA asking that they revisit that particular rule. I suggested a 50 mile radius limit from the check-in point, hopefully that will make the competition more fair. I received a reply that it would be forwarded to the tournament director, I guess we will see what happens.
That seems fair. I don’t fault the guys from Jax but rather the IFA
