How much is to much ??

I was looking online at artificals and I am always up to try something new. They looked cool very slender and had a good selection of colors. I had never seen this product in any of our local tackle stores. I added some in my basket 5 packs totaling $20. I go to checkout and it is $10 shipping. I cancel my transaction and send the guy an email and tell him that it’s just my opinion but due to your high shipping cost you might be losing some business. I got a HUGE dirty email about who am I to question his shipping cost and went on to say how everyone else has cheaper shipping due to them using the US Postal Service and how horrible they are, and that his shipping cost are so high because he uses FedEX and I would get my product in 2 days. Is it just me or is this bad business, or was it a bad move on my part to send the email to start with. I was just trying to help the guy out because I indeed didn’t buy his product due to the (in my opinion) outrageous shipping charge.

Opinions ???

You were not out of line and his response tells you that you did the right thing by not ordering. He has some things to learn about business

Simon,

You’re absolutely NOT out of line. Regardless of how the seller feels, he could’ve been much more diplomatic in his response. I’m in sales myself, and it surprises me how often other salesmen get into pissing matches with the very people they rely on to make a living. Maybe that guy will finally get clue when he goes out of business…

“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

I agree with BB and Opti. That guy has a LOT to learn about running a business. Lesson 1: offer shipping options to the consumer. If you want/need it in 2 days… Pay to get it in 2 days. Otherwise, snailmail (USPS) should be a cheaper or even free option. But, never should a salesperson tell a customer anything of that sort.

Probably wouldn’t have caught fish anyway with all that bad ju ju.

I pre-ordered some lures in Jan. from Livingston Lures. New lures that were tested last year but not available for the public until Feb. When I didn’t get them when expected I sent an email. To my surprise the president of the company emailed me back, asked for my phone number, called me while he was at the Bassmaster Classic, apologized, sent my order and refunded my purchase price because of the delay and inconvenience. THAT’S customer service at its best that will help a new company like Livingston to succeed.

Enjoy good stories … thanks for not making me feel like I was crazy …

Awful business sense as already mentioned by others. If I approached business like that pretty sure big boss would have had me gone less than a week in many years ago!

If a business person does not know how to use customer ■■■■■■■■ to their own benefit, they have no clue what they are doing and indeed will not be a business person for very long IMO

When I find high shipping costs (VERY common) I pass on it.

But you’re right in what you did if you found it to be too high.

Business owners have no need in sending huge snooty emails. A five to ten sentence paragraph should put forth his position rather nicely. Any more than that is just a rant.

On the flip side, there are times I don’t balk at a high shipping price if I know and like the company for their otherwise good customer service. I just consider it part of the fee for doing business with reliable, reputable, friendly folks.

You don’t always need it in two days. Good companies will give you choices on shipping. You had all the right in the world to complain, it will be his loss of a possible long term customer since he was so unprofessional in his response to you.

you could also go to one of the local tackle shops, show them what you want and they can order it,if it comes from one of their normal suppliers,no shipping cost to you

Whats the guys name/name of his business so the rest of us don’t deal with his poor customer service? When he potentially loses a few dozen customers due to bad word of mouth on forums like this, maybe he’ll change his ways of dealing with his customers. You did the right thing.

I will post it tomorrow when I get home

I kick sales people out of my shop all the time… you’re coming into my shop trying to sell me something so you can make a living and you’re giong to be cocky with me?? really?? leave now… lol

I’m too busy for all that, and there’s wayyy too many competitors out there. Plus I was brought up old school in the times of secret shoppers and places that would fire people for not asking the right questions…

if you want my money show me something worth it, and then prove why I should buy it from you instead of the 50 million other people selling basically the same things

and even if you’re good I’ll try to get a discount out of you… lol

there’s a lot of things I want, but very few I actually need… that guy would have been burnt toast to me…

Here is the email I sent to Reaction Strike. ReactionStrike.com

Read it from the bottom to top, the bottom being the first email I sent to the individual. I hope no one from the site EVER uses this business because he was very unprofessional and rude. I hate that I even thought about ordering from him.

It is hard not to be adversarial to someone who is (a) not a customer, (b) complains about a very routine amount for shipping, and (c) sends me an unsolicted email complaining about something that is entirely within your control to eliminate.

I don’t know what you do for a living, but if I sent you an email with close to zero knowledge about how you do business suggesting improvements to your business, I am guessing you would be rolling your eyes about the same as I was.

Thanks,
Rick

Sorry for the criticism. I was unaware you were using 2 day shipping as that isn’t listed on your website. To be adversarial with someone based on a critique of your business is pretty unprofessional. I was only trying to help you with my comments.

Thanks for your time

Really? Well, then you have never shipped anything by FEDEX. I assume you are an individual, and not a business? FEDEX charges $2 extra for residential delivery, they charge on average 80 cents extra because of high gasoline prices, and the average shipping price is about $7. So, $9.99 is break-

This “business” response is shocking. You should have been thanked for your original email, or at very least apologized to for the high shipping cost, because you were polite and respectful giving important perspective from the consumer side that could possibly help the “business”.

just sent them an email saying they can be sure no one from CharlestonFishing will be doing business with them because of Richard Quade.

As a small business owner,i see both sides of this disagreement…but i really sympathize with shipping cost, they are out of control,i lose most of the time when i ship something…i agree also with the useless postal service, they have lost more product coming and going than i care to think about…

“Yeah i fish offshore and yes i turn my VHF down sometimes,i know that makes me a bad person…”

wow, one things for sure i won’t ever order from them.

What an idiot. Doesn’t Fedex offer ground service if he doesn’t want to patronize the USPS? Or UPS?

No matter how you feel about the merit of a customer’s comments, or potential customer’s in this case, they should be taken graciously and thanked for their input. Then you as the business owner or manager decide if those suggestions are acted upon.
