I have never fished specifically for flounder before. I will be around Lucy Creek/Morgan River area for the next couple of weeks in my
bay boat.
I guess to fish the bottom with mud minnows, but what is the best rig?
What is the type of area to look for? What is the best time of day/tides? Any hints?
Splitshot with a leader around 1’. Cast it out and reel it back very slowly. Flounder ambush bait so you’ll have more luck if you cover ground instead of just throwing it out and soaking it. Give them a second to eat it after they bite before setting the hook.
I’m no flounder expert, but my best guess is low outgoing tide, early or late in the day, knee deep water or less in an area with a lot of shallow creek mouths draining a huge mudflat (see Google Earth). Oyster bars nearby a plus. Fan cast a 1/4 oz. jighead with a 3" white gulp shrimp or a mud minnow just inside or just outside the creek mouths. Slow count to 10 before setting the hook. Keep moving until you find flonder. Google Southern Flounder. Good Luck!
I prefer outgoing just as the water clears the grass. Look for a mud edge and drift a mudminnow under a popping cork about 6" from the edge. Must have good flow. Lots of time the float will just stop, let it sit for a while. Flounder bite soft. People think they are hung up and pull the bait out of their mouth… good luck!
