Going to be camping at hunting island in june and would appreciate some fishing advice. I will be bringing My 18’ Lund pro v I know not the ideal boat for down there but its what I have. I see Russ point landing is near the camp ground, so was wondering how the fishing is there, I also see Butches landing but looks very shallow, can I launch there with my rig? I appreciate any advice just want to enjoy the water and catch some fish on my weeks vacation
You could launch at either with that boat no problem. At dead low at Butches it will be skinny but, enough to float your boat. Would have to shallow drive out. Once out the little creek by the ramp no problem. You can also try Station Creek to get out to Trenchards Inlet and Eddings Point to get out in Morgan R and the sound around Morgan Island. Both within 10 miles. I prefer Station Creek and Edddings for the creeks available. Out of Butches had best luck in Johnson Creek or Harbor River flats and big flat just around corner past the bridge. You can get there out of Russ Pt also. Can get snotty out of Russ if wind and tide are in conflict.

Thank You for the info, much appreciated! Any advice on getting into reds, I have yet to catch 1 and hear they are very good eating and put up a good fight. My only experience is a couple trips to the flats in Florida where I have caught most of the game fish but the reds always seem to elude me. I’m a northern boy so I,m used to fishing lakes and rivers for walleye.

Bring lots of bug spray and a screen room for over the outside table if you have one. A fan is a must that time of year. Mud minnows under popping cork works well for reds. Invest in a wire minnow trap and bait it with vianna sausage, put it in a creek or drain ditch for about 4 hours. All the bait you will need. Keep minnows a 5 gal bucket with cheap 120 vac aquarium bubbler from Walmart. Keep a top with small holes on it. The will jump out at night and the koons will steal them. A 6’ cast net will provide bait also. If you are from out of state don’t forget saltwater fishing permit. DMR guys will smile as they write you a ticket, you can get them online. I catch more fish on the tide changes.
10-4 on the bug spray, I spent a few days there about 5 years ago and remember bathing in bug spray, and I remember the coons I thought were cool to see til I got up the next morning to find my camp torn apart by them, then I thought they would make nice hats. Good pointer on minnow trap, I do it here but didn’t think of bringing it with there. Its on the pack list now. I do have a cast net but I’m not the best at it I catch bait but hope nobody is watching me laughing. Yes we will get our saltwater fishing permit, South Carolina has got to be the cheapest out of state licence I have purchased. Thank you for the advice and if you see a cheese head out on the water from 6/9 thru 6/15 feel free to stop by and say hello. and if you want a good laugh I’ll show ya my castnet skills.
