Hunting Island

I went to Hunting Island Saturday 2 hours before high tide. The only info I could find was to fish the point by the river (near Fripp) in sight of the pier. I dragged my beach cart through a mosquito fog to the beach to find the water was already too far in reach the point. There were also about a hundred downed trees blocking the beach.

I had to backtrack and drive to the north shore beach. There were no fisherman, a bad sign, but I fished along a metal jetty. Five hours later no fish, using cut finger mullet and Gulp shrimp.

I couldn’t fish the pier because we had our dog. Any tips on where to fish on Hunting Island?

You should have fished in the trees. You’ll lose rigs but you can do very well on the fish. Structure, structure, structure. It’s not all about the troughs, the trees are structure too and can be very productive.

Olde Man Charters

I thought about staying but had the wife that wanted a beach. That is why I fished both sides of the metal jetty. I usually do not have time to see the beach at low tide for troughs. At Folly Beach I always catch something along the rock jetties at high tide.

I have an old surf fishing book that said Hunting Island was a wasteland for surf fishing. I thought I’d try it in October anyway, catch a croaker - anything.

Try the north end where Johnson Cr comes out into the surf. That last groin use to be concrete and bigger than the rest. I have seen some fish taken on the metal groins. The lagoon down where the footbridge is good. May need a canoe or yak to get to it. Right where wide place goes narrow. Oyster rakes on back side. Also under and around the Johnson Cr bridge on 21.
