I know this has been touched on and I did some research but can’t come to a conclusion as to wether or not a hydrafoil will help me. I have a j16 skiff with a 25hp 2 stroke yamaha and it gets on plane fine when I’m by myself but when someone is up front it doesn’t. I know the motor is small for the boat but I was wondering if anyone thinks a hydrafoil is a good idea or not. If it is, what kind should I look at getting?

I have that same boat with the 25 four stroke…the problem with mine was that it would “porpose” without the Hydrofoil. It came with it on there but I tried it with it off the other day because I installed a Tilt/trim with a 5" set back thinking I wouldn’t need it and ended up putting it back on.

If you have 2 people in the boat and fishing gear, what is your top speed? I’m only hitting around 12knts, and 18 to 20 by myself. What kind of hydrafoil is that? Thanks

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>Just throwing out a guess based on my experience. Sounds like you are plowing the boat with your current settings. Pitch the motor back a notch or two and let us know the results.
I can’t remember ever hearing a guy with a flat bottom boat NOT saying, “my boat is porpoising, what should I do?” So, you might have the motor pushing the bow down a bit too much. ?

Thanks, I’ll give this a try

Probably 20 mph with 2 big guys…maybe 25 by myself. I’ll check the brand…don’t know off the top of my head.

John, you were getting around 22/23 mph on my GPS the other day running beside you.
Interesting, so something is up then because my motor is probably lighter than yours being a 2 stroke so I should be reaching the same speed or maybe a little more. My motor tilt is one hole above the bottom one so maybe I should slide the pin out so the motor is down to the bottom hole and maybe that will result in my bow lifting more and an increase in my speed. Judging by your pick our motors look like they are at the same tilt though so I’m not sure.

Tried putting the motor down to the bottom hole on the pin and it didn’t make a difference. It was originally on the 2nd hole from the bottom. I wonder if moving it up to the 3rd hole from the bottom would make a difference, or should I just leave it at the 2nd from the bottom and look at new props?

Generally the deeper the motor is, the more it pushes the bow of the boat down. Trimming the motor UP will raise the bow. I would certainly try going to the third pin before prop replacement. The other adjustment is the height of the motor on the transom where it’s bolted on. Motors come in different shaft lengths, make sure you’re not using a long shaft motor on a short transom boat.

I’m going to tilt it up to the 3rd hole and give that a shot. I believe its a short shaft motor and its a j16 skiff so I am pretty sure I am good on the shaft length.

Used the 3rd hole with someone up front. Lifted the bow a little but not more than a mile mph in difference in speed. By myself on the 2nd hole from the bottom I max out at 20mph. I’m leaning toward the prop, maybe too much pitch.
