i need help on fishing in edisto!

I live in Georgia but i vacation at Edisto every year in July.I always mess around fishing from the beach, but i have a boat now and i want to try some fishing inshore. My boat is just a 16ft. triton duck/fish boat. I would love to catch a red or two. Does anybody have any suggestions on where to begin and some good lures to try? I’m not looking for your gps hot spot, just a place to begin. I’ve never been out down there and do not have any experience with saltwater fishing, just bass fishing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.:sunglasses:

Reds and trout are an awful lot like bass. Look for structure, like docks, oyster mounts, points, etc. And in Edisto, especially look for clear water. It can get pretty muddy at times. If so, use scent like fresh cut menhaden or mullet on a carolina rig, or a gulp on a jighead. Fish slow on the bottom. There are also lots of bonnethead sharks and they love quartered blue crab and can match a big redfish for a line pulling fight. Oh yeah, around low tide will probably produce reds the best. Captn’s Bob Sanders and “UglyDuck” Fralin will also give you some tips I am sure.

Thanks for the response. I have heard that it is alot like bass fishing and that is why i wanted to try it. I will take note of the types of structure you are talking about and look for that. As for “UglyDucklin”, I actually just sent him an email. I am thinking about going out with him to sort of buy me an education. I have never been out down there before so i do not know where to start. It would probablly be a good idea to book a day with him. Thanks again for the response.

For starters, get a castnet. Catch some menhaden or mullet. Carolina rigs on the bottom with live menhanden, live mullet or cut mullet. Near structure. OR live shrimp or mud minnows on cajun thunder popping cork…drift it near structure and pop it periodically. That should produce trout or reds.

I wouldn’t try to get all complicated at this point. I’m still learning, too, after several years. I try to keep it simple.

That’s my 2 cents worth, and that’s about all it’s worth, too. The other guys know far more about it than I do.

Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…

Posting on a message board all the time doesn’t make you smart. Frankly, it just means you probably need to get a life.

Find and fish trees that have fallen in creek on a hard bottom, its a good place to start.Cut mullet, menhaden or shrimp will do it. Fish some on bottom and live bait under cajun float in same area. This is mainly for spot-tail bass. If live bait swims and hangs you try fillets of finger mullet or menhaden under cork as strip bait it works good also and maybe if there’s any left, a trout will hit that also. If you fish very early or very late in the day try your favorite top water artificals if you see fish chasing bait. This will work for you around live shell beds also.Good luck!

You can’t catch fish on a dry line

Got your email, Robby. Just give me a call.
