we couldnt catch anything in the alantic ocean today but BSB no matter where we went we couldnt fight the dam sea bass off long enough for anything else to get on. Up side of it was we ended up with some of the biggest BSB I have ever seen. 4-5 pounds was probably the average of a 3 man limit. Did get one trigger as a bonus
beats work’in!
We did the same thing on Sunday. Depth finder was showing schools of sea bass 30 ft up at some places.

So your upset about catching lots of big fish of a species whose catch allowance for the year was recently doubled? I guess you didn’t attend any of the recent scoping meetings either, huh?

I think what he is saying is that he can’t catch anything else because there are so many BSB. In fisheries, you CAN have too much of something.
Are we up to 10 BSB’s now?

Sniper7- you and many others on here that want to complain about SAFMC and the rules need to start sacking up and coming to the meetings- nothing gets done without more voices being heard- i know you would get more out of sharing your story in person with SAFMC than typing about on this website- we need more people coming to the meetings and with all the public notice and postings before the last several meetings its a (**() shame that so few people don’t come- Im sure SkinneeJ has a perfect excuse but pretty shocked as well not to see/hear him at the last meeting- you guys need to put the keyboard down and do something in person about it
In my experience the Seabass tend to pile up bad in the winter. Once the warm weather comes back they seem to disperse. I dont have any science or good explanation why but just seem that way to me.

Seems like If they really wanted input they would have the meetings later in the day or weekends when the average working man who can barely stay ahead in this economy could attend!
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

Agree with Bug Catcher.
I work in the Midlands but the vast majority of my fishing is done along the coast. No way will you ever see me at one of their meetings.
Whenever our DNR holds meetings to gather public input, they usually have them in the evenings and scatter them all across the state. Another reason I believe the State should be responsible for the fisheries off our coast.
It’s obvious that they (SAFMC) really don’t want the input… just going through the motion.

The Charleston meeting was held on at Haddrell’s Point in West Ashley on a Monday evening (6pm to 8pm). Only a dozen or so people showed up. There was a similar evening meeting in Columbia, organized by the CCA, that had ZERO attendance.

What I did that wasnt behind a keyboard was get some petitions from freefish get people to sign them and seng them in. Im sure that isnt enough either but it is humourous to see people assume they know what they are talking about…and we all know that the definition of ass-u-me is right? Skine hit it. There is an overpopulation and the catch is so limited. And it was recently doubled to 5 (not 10 tank) which is 25% of what it was 15 years ago.
Last year my son and I dove on one of the DNR ARs. The target fish of the day was a few spadefish. The 13-15 inch seabass were so thick it was crazy. The whole bridge structure was covered with smaller bsb but the amount of “mature” legal size bsb was unbelievable. Easy to see how you can’t get a hook past them.

In 105 ft of water i reeled up slow and with two hooked at least ten more swam all the way to the top hitting the sinker and the hooked fish. I showed the guys on board. They couldnt believe it. Big bsb for the day was about 22 in

I agree,i am in the upstate, very hard to get down there during the week, actually impossible, now have that meeting on a saturday,i would. Be there…
With that said,i really appreciate everyone who does attend and try to right these wrongs…
Absolutely…
My hat’s off to those who go to the meetings and make the stand.
Nothing but respect and thanks from me. I’ll do what ever I can to help, but it has to take a backseat to my job and family.
I can write all the letters your heart desires. I’ll talk to anyone who will listen, just can’t be in Charleston at the drop of a hat.

Contrary to Bugcatcher and many others ignorance they actually DO want our (recreational fisherman) input. This last meeting at Haddrells was the most open, positive, and approachable meeting you could have ever gone to. They WANT to work with US for better solutions. It may not have crossed your minds…but the people running the meetings actually have a family, bills, time constraints as well, so although saturdays or sundays would be best for many people, 6-8:30 at night is quite accommodating taking all variables into account. Just b/c its govt doesn’t mean they have a giant budget to work with, which would allow for overtime pay for many people to do this on weekends. The meetings were planned and advertised well in advance. I clearly don’t work for SAFMC and I only want to help the future of the fisheries and our right to fish as “free” Americans. But many on here need to buy a passport and a plane ticket or whatever will help them/you have more of an open mind to these issues and how to work together to solve the problems. 90% of the people at the meeting were people with business (local/federal) involvement and there were maybe 3 other rec/non $ interested people there. Get on SAFMC.net and sign up for the emails if you need more info on when these meetings are. The emails are quite helpful with any updates on rules change and notice well in advance for upcoming meetings all over the East Coast. Many people on here complain about “just getting by” or “work conflicts” as excuses for not coming to the meetings, but you know (**() well you would get out of work to go fishing and spend $ on fishing. The thought of making a sacrifice to attend the meetings might seem wild and crazy, but if you want to fish 10 years from now and have thoughts on ways to help manage a healthy fishery then get off work and get it done!
Maybe the govt. employees could take Friday off and “work” Saturday. That way “we” wouldn’t have to pay them overtime, they could still work a 5 day week, and there would be a better turnout in theory. Our govt employees (or is the PC word associates) could even fish on Friday when there are less boats fishing in order to determine how horrible the BSB stocks are. I live at least 2.5 hrs away so a weekend meeting would be beneficial to many I would imagine.
