Ice Pick

I was not sure where to post this question. I make ice in 20# blocks and chip them up for the cooler. I am having trouble finding a good ice pick. I have ordered two from the internet and they were both junk. Both were supposed to be stainless and they were not. Both bent on the first use, one snapped off on the second use. Y’all got any idea?

Thanks!

Try your wife’s good sewing scissors like my dad did one time. That was at least 30 years ago and he is still catching hell for that one to this day! :face_with_head_bandage:

How about a big phillips screwdriver, sharpened to a point?

I been thinking about that. I asked my screw driver drawer for a volunteer and didn’t get a peep out of them! If no knows of a source for a good pick I will go the screw drive route.

Thanks

I also use a large screwdriver sharpened to a point with a grinder. You can’t buy an ice pick that strong.

Cheap screwdriver ground to a point. Have done this for years, never broke one and it works great.

I have several of these. They have a steel end that you can hit with a hammer, and I abuse the crap out of mine. They make them in several sizes, so find one that works best for you.

Phillips headscrew driver sharpened is the way to go.
Or you can get an old crowbar grind it down and use that.[maybe a litle over kill]

Double D.

I fill all my old milk jugs with water and freeze them. When it comes time to bust them up I use a claw hammer.

I use a pick hammer (the kind a welder uses) that I sharpened. It has a blade on one end and a pick on the other. Works great.

Thanks all ya"ll.

I had about decided on a sharp screw driver and the welder’s chip hammer sounds good also. The grand prize winner came from my neighbor. I have a small one hand air hammer that has several bits. We ground one down to a sharp point and the thing is amazing! I do use a plastic bucket to chip the ice in, careful of the ice chest. The boat now sports a sharpened Philips head (did need to drill out the ice pick hole on the tool holder).

Peace reigns and no more cussing around the freezer.

The air chisel is a great idea :sunglasses: I’ve got one of those, never thought to use it for busting ice blocks. Thanks!

I use a slag hammer as well. Super cheap at Harbor Freight. I use one when oystering as well to separate oysters from empty shells.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”> You and most of New Jersey since the 70’s.

$20 bucks to the first guy that helps me remember the Richard Pryor movie that I have been trying to hunt down from my childhood. The catch line was when Pryor walks in on a New Jersey guy explaining how he was, “popping this guy when the handle breaks off my ice pick.” “I’m standing there with a stick in my hand”. “I looked like a f-n idiot”.

Back to the subject. Why not freeze small bottles and NOT break them up?

You could go to a hardware store and buy an awl.

iFly - The movie you are looking for is Richard Pryor - Live on the Sunset Strip. He does a bit on the Mafia, hilarious!! Saw it on steaming Netflix a few months ago, its probably still available.

On YouTube he starts going into the Mafia routine at about 22 minutes. They cut the ice pick portion. BUT, Pryor put that story into a movie. What is the movie? Anybody?!?
