Im gonna need a bigger rod -6/3 update with video

Got up super early, 4.30 ish, ready to head out and it started pouring.
Finally left the house 5.30 ish and as soon as I crossed Ben Sawyer it was raining again. Got my rain gear on and headed out. Caught 3 or 4 Spanish, all deep on silver. It was pretty gloomy out there with some decent sized swells as well. Couldn’t find any birds feeding, so it was basically just trolling around. I did see a baby pelican which was a first, looked identical to a mature one but about 2/3 the size. There was a bunch of them hanging out on the North Jetty rocks.
Went out to about 35’, then tried the main channel, then back along the south side of the N Jetty. Got a couple more smallish Spanish, then it happened again. Something hit the Clarks spoon and took off, i chased it, took off again, had it on for maybe 10 minutes before the lure was released, or pulled out. 10 minutes later it happened again, and whatever it was pulled a fast one on me and managed to wrap my braid around my prop. So that was a fun 15 minutes getting that out, oh, if the good Samaritan who came over and checked on me is reading this thank you very much.
I think i need to get some gloves, my hands are kinda torn up from hauling the braid in, and I need to figure out what kinda gear I need to use to actually stand a chance with these mystery fish. Im 0 for 3 in two trips.

Dude, you have it bad.

Jacks you think? I’m going in the morning bright and early. Thanks for the report I will try some trolling spoons on a big shark rod with 80# braid maybe get lucky?

Guns kill people just like spoons made Rosie O’donell fat.

I don’t know man, I’m brand new at this, this was only my 4th trip away from ICP and creeks. Its v addicting tho
good luck, hope you catch one and can tell me what they are!
If it helps, both of the big hits came pretty close in, just to the south side of the sunken N jetty, maybe 3/4 mile from the shore.

Thanks for this report. Going to try to get out and troll around early Saturday.

Tidewater 198 CC

Get a Penn Spinfisher 6500 or bigger on a jigging rod and spool it with 60lb braid or larger for “bigger fish”

After being released, a lot of fish die, but a lot of them live also.

maybe a king mackerel if youre trolling…
you can find a 6000-8000 Penn Fierce II for pretty cheap. Those Spinfishers are quite expensive…
Throw some 60#-80# braid or a stronger leader on too.
Hope you catch what it is so we can hear the story! good luck

You need some line on that reel. Looks like something of mine midsummer after a few beat downs.

You can always put mono backing on that thing if you only bought got 150 yard braid spool.

Can’t catch um with out trying

Y, y’all ate right on the reel, TBH I got it a while ago when I fished off shore a couple of times with a bud before I got my boat. Will either back the spool or refill.
Good eyes Captain!
