Im gonna need a bigger rod -6/3 update with video

Buddy met me at house at 5.30, on the water at 6.

Short version - 0- 6, just today, on the mystery big fish.

long version

Had my big fish rig, Jigging rod, 80# braid, 50# mono, 3.5" spoon ready to go. I know this sounds stupid but i literally couldn’t sleep as i was trying to figure out what I could do to get one of these mystery fish on board, hell, i would probably give up the tip of my left pinkie (with anesthetic) just to see what the f’ ing thing is. So, my plan was to have my buddy on the rod, assuming we could get a hit, and i would manage the boat.
Have the heavy rig out (see previous pic) with a 2 oz torpedo and a reg spanish rig. Follow the sunken N jetty out, hit the super shallow spot, 3.5 ', and the heavy rig goes off and i think we have caught up on the rocks, but no, its a fish…presumably, at this point it could be a Navy diver in a super secret underwater jet ski f’ing with me. My bud has the rod, Im backing down on the fish, same as before a couple of long runs, get it in close, almost under the boat, start pulling it up and guess what, the lure comes back. Im kicking myself as i thought if we were lucky enough to hook up on this rig we would get it in.
Dropped the lure back in, within 2 mins same thing happened. So, obviously the hook is pulling loose, so my thinking was to try and set the hook better, 15 mins later i get a chance to try my cunning plan.Spool starts spinning, pick up rod, tighten drag, and kinda heave into the fish. The result was less than successful in that the 50# leader immediately broke. So, i saved 10 minutes attempting to pull the fish to the boat and loosing it, but lost the $16 spoon.
Same thing happened another 3 times, i **** you not, 3 times! If anyone wants to give it a shot follow the sunken N jetty out, it gets super shallow and there was a crab pot buoy right where we got the hits. Good luck, i will be saying a prayer for y’all tonight, i just WANT TO KNOW WHAT THESE FISH ARE! sorry, rant over.
Put the reg spanish gear on and caught maybe 6, not

I have the reel
Been looking for that exact rod
Where did you get it and
Would you recommend it?

I’m going hunting for them tomorrow AM

Doc, few weeks ago me and a buddy were catching some spade fish. At the beginning we were hooking them but kept pulling hooks loose while we were horsing them to the boat. Then started playing them more, letting them run more and just taking it easy, ended up boating a bunch.

We’re all anxiously awaiting your next update… This is good.

Are you trolling the north or south side of the north jetty?
I think a big Jack is the likeliest culprit. Regardless, I’m loving your posts!

Just go - My buddy who has a bigger boat picked up the rod and reel for me a couple of years ago for offshore bottom fishing. It seems to work fine, but given the fact I haven’t been now to get any of these big mystery fish on board I really don’t feel well qualified to say if it’s a good rig or not.
I’m fishingvthe submerged N Jetty, mostly on the N side but also crossing over it. Most of the big hits were where it got real shallow, the submerged rocks me up To 3’ or so beneath the surface and ten there was a deep drop to 12’. I slowed the troll down to allow spoon to drop down, that seemed to trigger a bite. There was a crab trap buoy right in that area, next time I’m out I will get the actual numbers.
I guess it could be spades but everything I’ve learned bout them is they are super hook shy, but next time out I’m going try and be more gentle when trying to get to the boat. But I don’t understand why I’m not getting a good hold on the fish even with the bigger lures and super sharp hook. I’m wondering if I need to do something different when I get the original take, let it run with it or something. It’s keeping me awake right now, in a good way. Hope someone on this forum can tech one!
Cheers

Just a thought but since the hooks keep pulling could it be that you are foul hooking big manta rays??? It just seems with that many hookups you would have eventually been able to at least get an ID on one. Jacks tend to have a pretty positive stay hooked up ratio in my experience. Sharks would cut you off. Nothing else big enough at the jetties to behave in the manner you’re describing. At least one of them would have skies if it was a tarpon. Just brainstorming here. Figure it out for me I’m curious now too

Had a pretty late dinner w/ friends last night but no problem getting up at 5 when alarm went off.
Short version - 0 for 8 today -

Got to my spot, first pass through fish on, 15 mins later fish off. 2nd pass fish on, was very very patient and kinda circled the fish (or whatever it is) had the drag almost as tight as it would go and fish was still making 75 yard runs. 15 minutes later fish off. This was prob the closest, as the weight was nearly on the surface meaning fish was only about 15’ away. Didn’t see it. Hooked up another 3 or 4 times, all in pretty much the same 40 square yards of ocean. You can see on my video i was getting the hits in about 4 or 5’ of water. Last one i lost the line broke. I had felt it rubbing n the rocks and the fish kept going back t the super shallow rocky area. At that point i had been fishing for maybe an hour and a half and it felt to early for a beer so i went off and tried to find some spanish. No luck, nothing. Headed back to the spot, i had retackled the big rod, used a shorter leader, and sure enough first pass through go a hit, pretty much the same story, had another two hits before I kinda got demoralized and went home.Ive been fishing since i was 5 or 6 years old, and I really do not have an idea on what i can be doing different just to see on f these fish. y’all can see exactly where i was fishing, can someone who knows what they are doing (as i clearly dont) please catch one and let me know?

I hadn’t thought of that, i guess that’s possible, i was leaning towards sharks, but dont have a lot of experience near shore. Whatever they are made a bunch of long runs, and as i mentioned, i tightened the drag up and it didnt make much of a difference.First few times i had to chase after it it get line back, then i tried basically going around in a circle keeping it of the side and closing in on it.
As ive said , been fishing over 40 years, this is a new one. i gave a couple of folks the numbers, maybe someone can get out there and get one in the boat. thanks for your constructive comments.hitting the sack now and will try and get some inspriation
cheers

I watched you video, twice, to me it looks like you could be hung up on the bottom. Not trying to troll you (not exactly sure what that means or how to do it)or be arbitrary… I hope like hell you solve this mystery and it’s a great catch… Best of luck luck
