Wonder what impact all this rain will have on shrimp season.
It is gonna suck. Dont even try. Just put away your net and forget it. (Just kidding)
River levels tell the tale. If they get way up for a period of time in next 3-4 weeks then it will have an effect. Edisto at Givhans is still only 3’ after coming back up. Not to panic yet.

I have been hearing positive reports from some guys that have been free casting. Especially in some deeper holes.
I think normal rain amounts are supposed to be good for shrimp numbers and growth, as nutrients are washed into the nursery areas. Too much or too little rain is bad. I guess the rains we have had so far have not hurt the shrimp, as I’ve heard several reports of good numbers of bait-size shrimp recently. Last year many of the larger shrimp were killed by black gill disease. Hopefully, that won’t be an issue this year.

Took this video last Thursday night up the Ashley River while catching bait for the Miracles Tournament. They are small now but they will grow.

Come on man! You are going to go and get my hopes up! Saw a lot of shrimp at Bulls Bay this weekend too.
Hopefully the cycle we have been seeing the last few years is over. Praying its better this year. Already having to buy inferior frozen shrimp .

Rain is generally good for shrimp growth. My Dad always said that the nitrogen in the rain was shrimp fertilizer. We are just coming off of a 10 year drought that probably caused the shrimping to be down the last few years.

Man I hope you guys are right!!! When you consider all the rain the coast has gotten this summer already plus the water that will be coming down from the upper state, a lot of fresh water has, is and will be pouring into the shrimping areas. If memory serves me correctly, all the rain we got last year washed out the shrimp in Georgetown harbor. Every time I tried shrimping in Georgetown I didn’t even get bait shrimp. Claim was the fresh water washed them out to sea.
Maybe we should start sprinkling fertilizer out every time we go fishing from now until the season opens.
I’m not sure about the coast, but It’s been dry as a bone up towards Rock Hill/Charlotte for over 3 weeks now. That should help.
They have to have some freshwater to grow. We need some now in the Toogoodoo area for em, its the big gully washer rain that runs em on out to the bays and sound and on to the ocean before they can size up. Plenty of little fellows in the creeks out to Wadmalaw

Looks like we have a solid week of rain ahead of us here in Charleston.
Not much impact here on Swinton Creek as the rains have been of the gentle type, good soaking but not downpours. Shrimp are ranging from medium to large with a few extra large thrown in. Caught enough today for two meals of wonderful shrimp scampi and put up three jars of large shrimp for later. Last week I coolered out (32 quart cooler) on consecutive nights. I think it will be a decent season. Catching shrimp 25 feet from your back door can’t be beat!

What do you mean by putting up in jars?
Plastic jars for freezing. we use the ones that sliced peaches come in. Very convenient and we use the frozen shrimp within a two week period for freshness sake.

When you said jars I thought you meant glass. I use plastic freeze containers filling them to about 1/4 inch from top. I pour in cold water and fill to almost cover shrimp and then place uncovered in freezer overnight. When frozen through I finish filling with water to top and place on lid and put back in freezer. This method keeps the shrimp from floating to the top and puts an ice cap over them to seal. A little extra work but no freezer burn and have kept 2 years and still OK. I reuse the containers from year to year; they stack nicely and don’t puncture like baggies.
I also put mine in plastic containers. One thing my wife found that helped is to top them with Ice Cubes. She packs the Container 3\4 full , fill with water 3\4, Top with Ice to keep the shrimp down until the water freezes. Works nicely.
