In and Around Edisto June 23-25

Spent a couple days bouncing around the near shore Edisto reefs with mixed results.

June 23 @ the Edisto 60

1 Trigger
1 Spadefish (several breakoffs due to taxman and operator error.)
1 Sheepshead
1 Wrasse
1 overslot Redfish (27”)
22 Ringtails

Spades were definitely schooling, but we didn’t have any cannonballs to feed them. Barracudas circling the boat. Sharks were still lying in wait, but seem to have thinned a bit.

June 24 @ the Edisto 60

1 Spadefish (several breakoffs due to taxman.)
25 Ringtails
A boat fishing 100 feet away using cannonballs was definitely bringing Spades to the boat.

June 25 @ the Edisto 60

1 Short Cobia (18”)
2 Remoras
6 Ringtails

@ the Edisto 40

1 Octopus
5 BSBs
5 Pinfish

Barracudas swarming reef.

Gonna might try to find me some Chinese cannonballs on Amazon.

Thanks for the pics and report!!

always wanted to catch an octopus, not sure if i’d eat it or not. really do love some tako, but they’re also super cool and intelligent

i caught like 3 dozen big squid in a deep hole net one time, that made for some amazing calamari

have you thought about a more assertive approach to spadefishing?

Agree 100%. Very cool and intelligent creatures. I wouldnt hesitate to eat one at Omakase, but it made me happy to cast him back into the depths.

As to the Spades, last year we did really well using cannonballs. If Id have known they would be sparse come summer, I would have stocked my bait freezer in May when they were thick off the beach.

And, as to your suggestion on being more assertive, yes, Ive considered it.
