Inconsiderate Angler at N Folly

Got to a crowded beach around 7:00 a.m. today. Falling tide. Stayed out for several hours. Caught a few blue fish, a whiting, a huge Ray and several unidentified fish similar to a Pompano. Will upload pic later. No reds.

So I set up about 80 yards south of another guy. There was an empty beach to my right. 30 minutes after I get my lines in, two guys pulling surf carts head my way and post up between us. One of them set up 15 yards away from me. His first cast crossed my line. Oblivious, he walks back and sets the rod in the sand spike. I reel my line in and sure enough, we’re tangled. So I stand there and wait to see his reaction. He walks over, untangles us, waves his hand and says “you got it”, like he was doing me a favor. I knew for sure he was going to apologize so I asked him ”what’d you say?” He repeated “you got it!”. My next response was “you’re not going to apologize?” He said for what? We exchanged words and he finally gave me a forced “I’m sorry” and walked away. Pissed, I stayed where I was and watched this guy cast all over me. He finally left after 4 hours of not catching a (**() thing.

If you’re on CF.com and you’re reading this, thanks for ruining my day buddy!! I’ll never fish Folly on a weekend again.

Should have been there last weekend it was worse

I first got into surf fishing hard core 5 years ago fished Folly all the time. Never remember it being this bad!

Sounds like my kind of crowd.
The Pompano looking fish was more than likely a Palometa.

I’m going off the grid next time I go surf fishing dparker. Here’s the pic.

My advice for Folly this time of year?

Don’t fish the North End. I have heard of dudes fighting…really. There are a bunch of great spots front beach void of the wannabe, heybo, goof idiots that can be at the North End. I always liked between 6th-12th east area. And just south of the Washout.

Bring 2 extra sandspikes and rods. Set them up a little distance from your main rods on both sides. People allways seem to think that your lines are straight out.

I had my best day ever today. Several other guys braved the rocks to help me land a fish…

For every ahole there is a lot more good people. Sometimes it can be a bad day or timing for people. Also it can be as simple as a misunderstanding or different opinions. In this situation i usually try to help and educate the other guy. Sometimes people dont see things the same and it takes a little of communication to produce similar views. The guy might not of known it was offending you so much. I probably would of told him to make some adjustments and helped him learn to cast if that was the problem.

This is a palometa. Pretty big I think. Most I’ve seen are from a net and just 2-3" long.

G

Appreciate the fish ID flyg and dparker.

This guys tone of voice and body language showed me that he was not open to constructive criticism. But I’m over it. Ending on a positive note…Im staying with friends on Pawleys Island next weekend and plan on hitting the surf hard. Will update everyone on how we do.

I was the other guy just north, he setup between us. We’ve got to be considerate of each others fishing space. Glad you left for the day with some catches!

I am brand new to surf fishing. I was just up at Hatteras and checked out the Point that is famous for the fishing. I mostly observed and had a blast just talking to people from all over. Nobody was catching much when I was there. Saw one big drum landed. One six foot shark nearly landed. When the drum fishing gets intense on the Point they have what is referred to as the “conga line” where everyone is moving and weaving with the current as it moves your bait down. Get to the end and pull out and go back to the other end. Never saw that but one thing will get people hot is someone using braid as it cuts the mono line of the others. The bluefish and spanish moved in close sometimes and pompano, spots, croaker, etc. More bait around than I’ve ever seen. Nothing but a bunch of fishermen. An occasional woman in the truck reading, LOL! Locals said fishing was a bit off and had been all summer.
