Info on Gar

I caught several Long nose spotted Gar lately off Maybank bridge pier. My question is can they be used for anything? I like to eat my catch.

I know a couple of people that swear by gar. VERY important to not do anything with the row, it is poisonous!

What kind of leader/bait/rig are you using to catch these gar?

Are you talking about the dock over by the St. Johns Yacht Club?

Yeah, I was curious as well. Are you floating bait? Didn’t know Gar fed on the bottom.

Gar will follow the scent. I’ve caught a LOT of gar fishing for catfish.

I’ve never tried to eat one, although I’m sure they are a great diet food. You’d burn more calories hacking through their hull than you’ll get from eating the meat lol.

My grandmother tells stories about life during the depression. Apparently gar or anything that swam in the lake near her home was considered food back then. Also, pretty much anything that lived in the woods and had fur, except for skunks…
When I was younger I would fish for gar, just for the fun of hooking up with them. All I ever did was put a dead, three finger sized bream, about 6" under a cork and wait for a bite. If you try this technique, let the gar run with your reel free spooling. Many times the gar will stop its run and come to the surface with its snout actually breaking the surface while swallowing the bream. When it starts off again, just set the hook hard and hold on. Gar can put on a real good show. Sometimes jumping 3 or 4 feet out of the water. Lots of fun.

Spoonmaster is right, they will run for quite a long time. When they stop, give them a few seconds, and set the hook.

Gar are not even good for the crab trap. Nasty things.

Thanks for all info friends.
Seaskiff89, nothing special but they prefer shark food, cut finger mullets whole fish thou and trace should be not longer than 24" with sliding sinker. I caught some on life mullet to but none on shrimp.
JInative888, yes that’s the place. I you go there and catch a ‘thing’ with a hook in his mouth and the rod and reel still attached it belongs to me. I was fighting a big shark on one rod while I watched the other rod fly off the pier. If any one want to catch sharks, big ones, they are over there.
Dparker677, I tried with floating line but no luck. All Gars were caught on the bottom and slow trolling in as well as with cast net(10’).
Spoonmaster, I can hear you have experience. They put on a nice fight but tricky to hook. The ones I caught was about 24" but I saw bigger ones surfacing. Lots of shrimp out there at the moment and I caught a very nice size sea trout there.

In love with Jesus

I like catching em on topwater, they seem to like a spook best. There is a method using cotton rope that works real well too. Cut about a 5 inch peice, tie a knot on one end and fray the other to make a lure. When they grab it their teeth get tangled up in the rope. You can use sharpee or paint to color the knot if wanted. They will bite it just plain white though.
