Finally decided to take a day off and go fishing. Drove down to Edisto from Greenville late on Wed night. Slept five hours, got up around 6:30 and hooked up the boat. Went to the marina, backed down the ramp, trimmed the motor down, and cranked it up…well, I turned the key, anyway. Battery was dead. Sooooooooooo, had to get a new battery (boat had been sitting idle since last August). After the delay due to dead battery, I finally was off and running. Headed out into the Sound and back into Bailey Creek. Put the trolling motor down only to find that it was also not working (despite charging it the night before…still not sure what’s wrong.) After a little searching I managed to find a bunch of menhaden. Since I had no trolling motor, I had to set myself up to drift through/past the schools and throw the net. Got a well full of menhaden and set off for a few spots I know.
Since I had no functioning trolling motor, I just fished all day using carolina rigs on the bottom with live menhaden around docks and fallen trees. Managed to catch two reds (16" and 27") and two trout (15" and 19").
At the end of the day, just for fun, I headed to the sandbar between the two channel markers near the mouth of Big Bay Creek. For kicks, I thought I’d try to catch a shark or two before putting the boat back on the trailer. Hooked a number of sharks, some bit off the leader and some I got into the boat. Also got one bite that took 100 yards of line in about 10 seconds and snapped the line like it was thread. Not sure what it was, but it was much stronger than those 3-4’ sharks I was catching.
Got some dinner, back to the house, to bed, and left Edisto for Greenville around 5:00 a.m. on Friday just in time to make it back to the office for work.
