There is a place that I fish where the viz (at least from shore) doesn’t seem too bad for around here (maybe 3-5 ft). I have seen a bunch of sheephead at this location, but can’t ever seem to catch them. I guess due to the viz they can see me too. So I’m thinking about waiting until winter when I might have a foot or two more viz. and going after them with a Hawaiian sling or my AB Biller. As far as I can tell from the SCDNR regs, I would be legal in doing this. Am I correct, and has anyone done this?
I am not talking about the Jetties. Cooper River, Saltwater side, only have an hour maybe 90 minute window at high tide before viz goes and current really picks up.
I think that I would try free diving it. Water depth is 10 ft or less. Low viz doesn’t scare me. I am used to it.

Narcosis,
I have speared inshore a bunch. 3-5ft of vis and you are good to go. Get in the water now! Those fish might migrate offshore here soon… Swim super slow and have your gun out in front of you ready to go. Let me know how you do…
Regards,
Sandy
Thanks,
I am going to try and go soon. I have a very small window at the spot that I want to try.

I agree with long fins. Don’t wait too much longer. I’ve had success starting in late summer, but October has been the best month for river spear fishing for sheepshead for me. I freedive in 6-10’ of water and use a short JBL. My experience has been that good visibility = fish. Some days it is just too muddy and it is no good. Focus on the last hour before high tide for your best chance. Good luck and let us know how you do.
I gave it a shot last Saturday and Sunday. The Viz was not as good as the week before. It might have been the tides. Hit the rock pile and dock that I know about an hour before high tide on both days. Saturday I didn’t see any sheephead. Saw a couple of big mullet but I’m not out to kill them. Sunday I saw plenty of small sheep and one decent one on the outer edge of my viz. I did take a shot on him and missed. This weekend I will try it again while wearing my wetsuit so I stay longer. I was using one of my Hawaiian Slings. With all of the rocks, I figure that this is the way to go. I still jacked up my spear tip missing that sheep though.

JBL makes an arrowhead spear tip…
That’s the only thing I shoot in close up range in the rocks. Great for sheepshead! The tip can be super dull and it still cuts though the fish and bones…
