Interesting day

Got into a school of Jack Cravelle and Lady fish feeding top water in the Chechessee. Caught several and had a blast with these hard fighting fish. All were 8-10 pound range. Is this a common occurrence for these fish in the Chechessee?

Not uncommon for Jack Crevalle in the creeks. They are like bulldogs!

Have even caught them on fiddler crabs.

CAN YOU EAT THEM?

Many will argue otherwise but we do. I grill them fresh on hickory and charcoal butterflied.

Thanks for your replies…we’ve just always concentrated on trout, flounder and spot tails and have never really seen them schooling like that…fun day!

They are a blast to catch, I have seen them in the creeks and in the broad plenty of times.

I am going to ask a stupid question, but here goes…how do you find jack cravelles in the creeks without riding around looking for them or just getting freakin lucky? I have been dying to catch one for years and I thought the only way to catch em was to like sight cast to them at the edge of the sound on low tide in the morning.
Couldn’t ever get a perfect day and haven’t ever been able to catch one. They sound like fun!

We found them in the middle of the Chechessee about 28-35 feet surface feeding. They were feeding on jelly balls.

So you just ran into them and started sight casting?
That is awesome!
Did you throw them jelly ball chunks or lures?
They covered an area 28-35 feet?
That sounds real similar to spade fish behavior.

Yes…we had been in one of the creeks and coming out spotted them on top feeding. The water depth was around 30 feet and we caught them on top water plugs…spooks.

Best way to cook 'em is to put them on a plank over charcoal…season with salt & pepper & brush with butter. When fish is flaky, throw away and eat plank.
