Tom, I am from near Pittsburg, East Liverpool, OH. Have been in Pittsburg several times lately. Had a sandwich at Premanti brothers. I know folks down here don’t care about how we did it up north but Pittsburg may be the best food city in the country, in my opinion.
Joby
We go to Primanti Brothers every time we go back. I really miss homemade perogies.
Tim Cogan…Worked as a technician for NCR in W Cola for 21 years and have been working as a contractor doing the same for Intel for the past 12. Started fishing as a kid in the NYC/LI area. Only fished saltwater until moving south when I joined the army in 1976. I fish the lake most of the year, but use the winter to catch up on honey dos and an occassional inshore trip in Charleston. In the spring and summer I also kayak fish the Saluda river for trout and stripers.
I’ve met a good many of the local people that post on here and a few of the out of towners as well.
Jeremy Holt… I am an estimator for a Project Management company that builds most of the schools in the state, and other hospitability projects across the country.
I was born and raised in Myrtle Beach, but moved to the Harbison area about 4 years ago. I spent a few years in Charleston before coming here, and saltwater fishing has always been my first love.
Still trying to get used to the lake, but glad I get to hit inshore fishing still about 2-3 times a month.
Thanks to Tim and Chip for getting me headed in the right direction, otherwise I’d probably still be out on the lake at 2 pm in 100 degree weather wondering where all the fish are.
I too recently discovered kayak fishing and fell in love. LOL Hoping to try some topwater towards the end of the week in the yak.
My name is Shawn Gearheart and I work in commercial metal framing/drywall construction. I moved to Lexington about 5 years ago for work and got into striper fishing almost immediately. Until I joined Midlands Striper Club I didn’t really know anyone else that fished so most of the folks I know I’ve met through the club. I’ve been exposed to many different tactics through the club that have made me a significantly better fisherman. I fish year round though the summer time fishing is not something I get into much. I especially love pulling boards in the winter and cut bait fishing as soon as it is productive(late winter/early spring).
Hello, I’m Scott Ray. I grew up in Columbia then joined the Army out of high school and did 8 years. I moved back to Columbia 2 years ago and now work Law enforcemet. I fished mostly Wateree and salt water growing up so I am reletively new to Murray. I live in West cola so I have been tryin to get into striper fishing(and Murray catfishing). I have gone out several times with limited luck, maybe one or two stripers here and there. Hopefully I will pattern them down soon and catch some fish.
Hello I’m Bill Sample I grew up in Lexington and still live and work here. I’ve met Tim and Chip (Murrymaker)and Gorge and a few more at the fall get together last year. Great bunch of folks on here don’t get to fish as much as I like but I still love being on the water. I also sing in a local rock band ■■■■■■■■■!
Jack Rowe - Irmo. Been here since 2007. Born and raised in Maryland. Fished for Stripers (we called them Rockfish) in Chesapeake bay and along the coast. My roots are in saltwater fishing. Inshore and offshore but if I had to pick a favorite it would be surf fishing. Especially the Outer Banks. I’ve met several of you who post here and I’m good with faces but terrible with names so, I don’t be offended if I don’t remember yours right away. lol
Michael and Patricia Coine. Moved to Columbia in 2005. We’ve both been fully retired for 3 years now and it’s great. Gave up on black bass a few years ago and switched to stripers which are a lot more fun. Usually fish a couple times during the week and avoid the weekends. Don’t have room to store it at home and never got around to putting a hitch on the vehicle so we’re kinda water bound on Lake Murray. Appreciate the input from this forum and are members of the Midland Stripers Club. Patti got her wall mounter this year (20 plus), even if we did have to schedule a Trophy Trip to get it done.
Christopher “Riff” Browning, I am a real estate appraiser that grew up in West Columbia and now live in Lexington. I used to only flyfish and I’ve been out west on different trout fishing trips. I just got into striper fishing last year and have not done any other fishing since then. Nothing like seeing the rod tip slam down and bringing up a good size striper. I’m a member of the club and look forward to being in a tournament one day.
I remember the “Fogman” tournament. Quite a day. Visibility at about nothing. We were all glad to get the call that you were only lost since we already knew tyou would not miss a weigh in without something happening.
Joby
Yep. That was shortly before most of us got sophisticated gps and charts. The tournament was out of Dreher and most chose to fish close to the island. Back then, we didn’t allow for trailering; so I waited until I got around 1/4 mile visibilty and went to the fish I had been on in Bear. I had a fair day with 4 5-7 pounders. When it got time to pull up and run in, the fog really set in! I couldn’t see 50 feet in front of me. After wondering around for an hour, I stumbled upon a dock I recognized and followed the bank around to Putnams. There, I called Jennifer to take me back to BDI to get my truck and trailer. Meanwhile, you all raised me on the vhf to hear I was safe. I found out that 2 5 or 6 pounders won the tournament… A well-earned handle:smiley:
I’m Todd and I live in Cavins, SC in Spartanburg County. I have a little place on Cloud’s Creek where I dock my boats, so my trips to the dam are a long journey by pontoon. I’ve been in Maintenance for nearly 25 years with a degree in Electronics and work for a metal stamper making BMW body panels. I don’t get to the lake nearly enough, but I love to hear what everyone is doing and where the fish are biting. I’ve recently rigged my boat for downrigger fishing to try and get away from the hassle/cost of live bait. I love to catch anything that will pull back but my passion is Stripers. I also enjoy all forms of canoeing and kayaking and have been doing that for 20+ years in rivers, lakes, and surf. If you pull close to my boat you will probably hear Bluegrass music and see a big smile on my face- happy to be there. I picked SCGMC because I drive a GMC 2500.
I’m Rob and from Greenville. I am a recent addict to Mr. Linesides. I work on Saturdays and get little free time to enjoy the sport and my new addiction. I have fished for greenfish the majority of my life and find them easy to catch. However, Mr. Linesides is my arch nemesis. This being my first year I have striper fished only, has been full of errors and joys as well. Nothing like finding the pattern and seeing it payoff. Got the moniker when I sold my old CJ7 when my oldest daughter was born. My buddys in the 4wd club wore me out when I sold her. She is now 12 her sister is 10 and both have the same addiction and have been fishing with me since they were in diapers. Changed many on the bow of our old Triton tr20. Now we fish a Key West and they fight over who is gonna take it off the trailer.
My name is Rob Hunter, I am a Senior Account Executive with a national 3PL Logistics company and also a Sergeant with a local Sheriff’s Dept. I moved here from Pittsburgh in 1997. I live in the Red Bank area of Lexington as well. I have tried my luck at striper fishing on Lake Murray for years and due to great inconsistency and all out frustration I decided that just reading this forum, while extremely helpful, was not going to be enough for me so I joined and have gotten nothing but great advice and encouragement from some great people. My company actually does business with Happy Bob’s company, Striperskiff’s, Murrymaker’s and Team Wildman’s as well. I have actually set on the phone talking with Donnie (Team Wildman)getting tips on techniques and where the fish were… As for Steelytom and Chipman… There is NO experience like standing at Heinz field with your #4 special from Primanti Brothers looking at those six Lombardi trophies on your way to a Penguin Playoff game!
Carter Schwab. I grew up in Columbia and grew up bass fishing on windsor lake (the one you cross over on 1-20 heading east around alpine). After high school I joined the navy for 4 years. Got into Striper fishing about 8 years ago. I have a puke green 1978 bomber boat. You cant nmiss it it’s the ugliest boat on the lake. I repair printers, desktops, and laptops, and audio visual equiptment for Mcnair Law Firm.
I’m Woody Barnes. I went to high school at Irmo and have a marine science degree from USC. I work in regulations development at DHEC and have worked in environmental protection for 20 years in three different states. I lived in Raleigh, NC for 6 years and have family in NC and lived in North Georgia for 4 years before returning to Lexington, SC. I have fished for striped bass from Chesapeake Bay all the way down to the Flint River in Georgia. In fact, we should start a thread to list all of the water bodies where we have caught Striped Bass in case someone is planning a trip and would like some information… My list is extensive…
Team Shad Up & Fish
If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
I’m Charles Fortner of Irmo. Originally from the Easley, Pickens area as well but came to Columbia in 1968. I’m an outside sales rep for a local electrical distributor(HD Supply)and started striper fishing with the encouragement of Mr. John Sites.
Im Keith Blore from Laurens, Have been fishing striper since the early 70’s all over the south east!, Have been out of commission this past year due to 2 open heart valve jobs in the past 10 months hope this last one works!
Im Stanton Bost. I live in Lexington and I’m a functional application consultant, basically a software consultant. I grew up sailing and competitvely racing sail boats on the lake. I have always loved fishing and let it get in the way of racing. I have fished in the pro king tournaments, mated on offshore trips, and now fish for stripers on the lake. From small ponds to the big blue pond I love it all. I have enjoyed meeting and learning with Chip, James, Tim and Tom.
Like Chip I can’t wait to pull big baits on boards here soon. My boat is being redone now and is gonna be ready for this winter.

I’m Bryan Howell, originally from eastern NC, majored in Construction Management at ECU, and currently live in Lexington. I work as an engineer for a civil/heavy highway contractor and deal mainly with the environmental regulations associated with asphalt plants and construction projects. I enjoy trolling for stripers and haven’t quite figured out the live bait technique. Hopefully one day I’ll be as good at catching stripers as most of these guys are on here.
