IOP 1/2/2016

First outing of the new year. Pretty typical for Jan. only not cold. Half a dozen Whiting, a few small Blues, a small Flounder and more Rays, lost count. No Black Drum again . Not sure if this season will produce any big ones. Fished about 6hrs. off the beach around 4:00.

Not a bad haul for a time of year that every one else puts their rods up because they can’t catch any fish, Happy New Year Mr. Parker  I’ve got cabin fever and have resorted to my other hobby, cooking.. It’s going to be a looooooooooooooong winter. Didnt you catch that monster in March, only three more months, I’m going to fatten up like a “Bear”, I guess I could take up Yoga.

No fishing for three months…I would go nuts! Just got finished cleaning up my reels, not to be put up, but getting ready for the next trip. Those healthy Rays will give you a workout, especially with lighter line and wire hooks. It has helped me learn just how much my lighter rigs can take before failing.

And I read your post about the crab cakes, YUMMY!!! My wife ask if you cater?

And yes on the “monster”, mid March. I have caught 30inchers in Feb. ya just never know so I just go.

Those are Atlantic stingrays, I thought stingrays couldn’t tolerate cold water but when I went fishing yesterday that was all that was biting off the pier.

looks like a gulf flounder, cool.

kingfisha, atlantics have no problem with the cold- you’ll see them cruising flats on the coldest days of the winter. they’ll also eat a frozen shrimp on the coldest day of the year in case you just HAVE to get the skunk off, too!

cast for 10 minutes last evening and caught one nice trout (16-17") in the howling wind, impossible to feel the paddletail doing its job, but missed a couple other real aggressive hits. water temp in the harbor has dropped 7 degrees in 5 days and should drop more than 10 before it’s done. fish should be chewing like crazy… time to go sheepin’ when the wind quits.

The Atlantic Rays are in full mating mode now through Feb. Actually I catch more (mature sized) in Feb. than any other time. In July-August you start seeing the babies (3"-5"). I have never been one to just sit home during the “off” season. Those Rays are a welcome site when the surf temp is in the low to mid 50’s. I just strap on the chest waders, bundle up a bit, and get lots of lines out. It gets interesting when you have 2 or 3 rods bent over with one or more 10-12lb. Rays on each with drags sqealing. And OCCASIONALLY you could have a 48" Bull Red. :stuck_out_tongue:

I am waiting on my reels to finish getting cleaned then i am back out  Really need to learn how to do it myself haha, but I don’t really have the space to make sure I don’t lose anything… oh well, hopefully next week
