New to the area, starting a new job next week so I’ve taken the week to learn the new beaches. This forum has been a big help learning some of the where, when, and hows. Thought I would put my fishing report out, hopefully it’ll help.
Best day so far, went out on 4th st. IOP for the falling tide. Whiting and bluefish were hitting reguraly for the first 90 minutes, used one for my shark rig and caught a decent 3.5 foot blacktip. Died off after half low, maybe I was just missing the sandbar cuts. Excited to find one of the big toothies!
Question: When does the mullet/menhaden start running the beaches? Haven’t seen anywhere and starting to think I will be paying for bait all summer haha.
Many Thanks
Welcome to SC, as far as bait goes get a 3$ box of whole squid it stays on hook good at fishing store. Use to catch those whiting and blues, then cut in half and cast out into breakers on big surf rods then drink 12 pack miller lite they will come. Personally I like to fish 2hrs before to 2 hrs after high tide. Read the beach find the troughs and holes at low tide and cast into them and around them fish use them for Ambush spots when water rolls back in.Use a metal leader for sure those sharks get big and fat, some of them also get airborne if your lucky, its a sight to see. If you do drink the miller lite have someone drive you home the cops are thick, seriously. Come fall the reds also get thick and are a blast. I run with 2 bait rods 20 lb test and 2 big rods with 30ld test for big sharks and reds.Have fun Morgan good luck and dont drink and drive. The bait is in close.
Sorry, i forgot to tell you big rods need allot of line-I use at least 300 yds.
Congrats on your shark. The menhaden are here now and so are the mullet. They’ll come in close later in the summer and be thickest in the fall. Use shrimp to catch the whiting and blues but rather than cut them fish with them live. Live bait will out fish your dead bait. When you’re fishing with live bait you’ll know exactly when a predator is coming in for a closer look. Your bait will start freaking out before it gets hit. If you experience the bait freaking out often and no hits then you’re probably fishing with too much wire. Using less wire and more heavy mono has significantly increased the amount of hits I get on live bait. I’ve got the Blacktips from the beach down to a science but the true monster shark experts on here are the requim guys. Good luck this week. Pm me if you’d like anymore help.

Dear Capt, thank you for helping Im going out this weekend and will use your method and see how it goes.I was just trying to help the best i knew how. Although Ihave had allot of success using this method i do admit Ive been told your method is the best and I admit you have far more experience. Morgan listen to the capt. Mr killin what is the reason you like the shrimp better and are you hooking the whiting through the back or lips? Is there anything else about what i wrote that I can improve on? Ive always thought that the sharks would smell farther than they can see and it would bring them in, I guess i was wrong. Ive also like the fact you get 2 baits per whiting and i can cast them further. Once again thank you Capt Killin

A small tub of shrimp will last me about 4 or 5 trips and I find that I get more bites on it over squid in the surf. Sharks feel the vibrations and pulses a nervous bait puts out in the water in addition to its scent. I once had a cobia follow 3 different types of dead bait to the boat and refuse every offering I had. A live vermillion was cast out and when it realized a monster cobia was 10 feet away I could see why they were called beeliners. The vermilion zigged and zagged all over. It made the cobia go crazy. A huge splash of water and my drag was screaming. Live bait sealed the deal.

I can usually catch some bait by the windjammer marina. Low tide is the Best time imo. If you can get there in the morning before the wind picks up its buch easier to see them. As stated the menhaden are likely out there already. Bring an extra rope for more casting distance. Frozen mullet isn’t as good as fresh cut but it’s free and easy. You can use it to catch blues and use them as bait.
I try not to kill whiting since many people eat them but that’s just me.
First, Most, Biggest
I want to catch them all
