IOP 6/7

Went out this morning and got setup at around 7am at IOP, wanted to try out the new Baitrunner 4500 that I traded for. Put that reel on the uglystick and the Penn 6500 on the Penn reel.
Put on some sting ray ( frozen ) which was unproductive - ended up with a baby on it, and caught a total of 4 sharks on the baitrunner. I love that feature! How did I fish without it!
All were around 2-3 foot and caught on cut bait, mixture of fresh and frozen.
Also around a dozen baby sharks on squid. Got there on the falling tide and that is when most of the action happened.

So - seems I’ve got the hang of the little guys, can 4-5 footers be pulled out of the same spots? Or is a kayak mandatory for that size?

Sorry for the crappy pics, hard to take good pics of shark by yourself!

I’ve caught toothies to 7ft on casted baits and have seen 'em up to 10ft on casted gear, but, I do not recommend that 4500 size reel at all. It will probably catch a few decent size sharks but for the bigger sharks and the rays that you will hook you want at a minimum 300yds of 25lb test line. That will get you some sharks up to 6ft but bigger ones will find your bait. I used to use 350yds 25lb test until I hooked a freight train one night that I couldn’t stop and if the line hadn’t broke I would have gotten spooled. Now I have 300yds of 65lb braid and 50-60yds of 50lb mono topshot .it gives me decent capacity and when when I do hook the bigger sharks I can crank down the drag to turn them. Just my .02, good luck and catch ya some fish.

The 4500 actually is the same size as my new penn spinfisher 6500, it’s the older model. And it had 300 yards of 50 lb braid on it so I feel pretty confident

Ok, sounds good then, I didn’t realize that the baitrunners were that big. Should be able to find plenty of trouble. Those bigger sharks are there it’s just a matter of weeding through the sharpnoses until they head back offshore.
