IOP Help

I posted in the inshore forum and got directed here. I will be staying at the Wild Dunes resort next week. I know August is pretty tough because of warm water temps, but I’m going to give it a try. Is the surf productive near the resort? Are there any not so secret inshore creeks? Also I know Mt. Pleasant can be productive. Any tips on bait and technique? Thanks in advance for any info!

Fresh shrimp, small hooks on the bottom will catch everything. And if you like, cut up some Whiting on a bigger hook for Sharks and Rays. The Surf is alive everywhere, I’m sure near the resort is no exception.

I’m not sure where in the Dunes you are staying but there is a creek feeder that comes thru the golf course at the top of the island into the inlet. Only issue might be getting to it. Its quite a hike on the beach, almost a mile from the Port O’ Call which is where I stayed twice last year. Once in July, where I didn’t catch anything and October where I had a bunch of reds over 35 inches. Dusk is a good time for shark fishing, just make sure the bait is out as far as you can get it. There will be less people there than on the rest of the Isle as the Dunes is private and the closest entrance is 53 st that you can park at so you shouldn’t have to worry about a whole lot of people actually in the water. Once 5 pm comes around there is virtually no one in the water. I think that at the inlet, right at the bend, its a little crabby and I was pulling in a bunch of grass but a father and his two sons hit on a school of spotted trout at the creek mouth.
Like Mr. Parker said small hooks on a bottom rig and you should do fine.

If your place is by the pavilion or so and you don’t feel like walking all the way to the north end, there is a good spot right on the beach from Summer Dunes Lane. You can actually park on this street and it’s an easy walk to the beach. there is a big trough and bar there. Shrimp on small hooks catch plenty of whiting, rays, and occasionally a nice pompano (we caught two big ones last year). Sharks there too, but you really need to be considerate of the families and swimmers, so very early or late is the way to go. I’ll be there for a couple weeks in the middle of the month, PM me if you want more details, maybe we can connect.

Thank you all for the replies! This advice (and more, if more people want to chime in haha) will really help. I plan on fishing early and late. Def. don’t want to hook a swimmer. One other question though, where is a good place to get fresh shrimp and mud minnows?

Haddrels sells mud minnows and excellent tackle store with great advice too. Fresh shrimp can be bought at Simmons seafood 1400 IOP or super fresh shrimp can be bought for a couple dollars less a pound on the road side stand under the tent by Shem Creek. A good local salty fellow named Lewis Howard from Magwood seafood. 8432008228. Makes for a nice Low Country boil for an evening as well. If your coming from IOP look on the left side of the road just before Shem Creek, tucked just past a building under a tent for the shrimp man.Fishing is good in August like most said shrimp on a #2 or #3 owner hook will keep you busy. Find some troughs and sand bars. Check out Rich Trox videos online for ways to find them and fish them it’s a great help. If your looking for a good local seafood restaurant call Coda Del Pesce 8432428570 means Tail of the fish, I think. Upscale solid Italian seafood. Try the crudo "raw super fresh sliced fish " usually with a citrus vinaigrette and chilies. Chef is well known for it. Fritto Misto fried seafood app nice as well. Fish entrees solid too. Good luck and if you do well send us a report!

Got in last night. I am right by Summer Dunes Lane where BadgerFisher suggested I try. I’ve noticed a few sandbars and troughs here and there. I rented a bike and rode it back to a creek by Dewees Inlet. Casted a gulp swimming mullet on a carolina rig and got a few crab bites. Just went out there to test the waters; nothing too serious. I might surf fish at the mouth of the inlet at sunrise in the next few days.

Sorry for asking too many questions, but do tides matter around here? Back home (Virginia Beach) incoming is significantly better than outgoing. Again, thanks so much for all the advice. I will be sure to report back!
