I’m a new resident of Wild dunes and I’ve been out fishing the inlet between IOP/Dewees Island. I’ve got a carolina rig set up, w/ a 3/0 circle hook, 15lb mono lead and frozen shrimp+mullet from the marina. I’ve been out there about 4-5 times but the only thing I keep reeling in are baby shark and stingray (about 6 of each). At this point, I’m hoping to catch anything but baby shark/stingray (red, flounder, trout). Any tips for keeping those off the hook for this newbie? Thanks guys.
Mike
A smaller hook will help you catch other fish easier and try closer in like 1 to 3ft of water. If you can fish a gully or by structure.
3/0 what I use mostly but I know a lot of guys here will use smaller j hooks or or 1/0 circles. Try using fresh shrimp from harris teeter or the sea food store across the street from it. THe frozen shrimp that is sold for bait use usually is no good. sharks are abundant at this time since the waters are warming up. Only real way to get away from them/curb catching them is to us fresh shrimp. Youll still catch some but not nearly as many as when you use mullet or squid. where you’re at you should see some really good fishing. Look for structure whether its man made or natural such as troughs/cuts/holes/etc.
Thanks y’all this helps. As for the carolina rig… stick with it? Opinions on mono lead vs steel?
Alex you should look up Captain “killinR” on this site and contact him. He grew up fishing that area and knows it like the back of his hand. Charter an afternoon and shave 10 yrs off the learning curve. He will get you up and running in a matter of hrs. and can show you where and how to work that area. That area can be very productive:smiley: Mono liter for fish, metal for sharks.
