IOP Report - 12/30

Decided to venture to the other side of the world and go to IOP to surf fish yesterday. Experience has taught me that North Folly’s more than a little slow in winter.

Went to the county park around 11:00. Picked up a couple of small whiting the first couple of hours. Pretty slow, though. Took a little break. Started fishing again around 2:15. Caught two more whiting (good size; 13-14 inches), a small stingray and a small black drum. Also missed a couple. Think the hooks I was using were too large (3/0); just a guess. Either way, I lost a few.

The closer it got to high tide, the more the troughs filled in and the bite picked up. Wish I could’ve stayed 'til dead high, but I had other obligations, so I left at 3:30.

Seems like a great high-tide spot, but I can’t imagine trying to fish there when the tourist are back in town. Busy enough even yesterday.

4 hours of actual fishing - 6 fish - frozen shrimp. Cut mullet got no love.

Great report Teddy. And welcome to the other side of the world. In my 30+ years surf fishing S.C. I have learned 1 important lesson. Big hooks catch less fish. Normally I use no bigger than a #2, not 2/0 plain shank Eagle claws. In the spring - summer I use #4. Here is a 30+ inch Red on a #2 hook. He was’nt goin’ anywhere.

“If it were catching, Everyone would be good at it.”

Thanks. Folly is more convenient for me, and North Folly, in particular, is great for avoiding swimmers and such, but I’m going to try to move around a little more this coming spring/summer. North Folly was fairly productive for me last year, but with the exception of a couple of large reds, it tailed off in the late summer/early fall.

I used to fish Folly alot. But it has become more congested the past 4-5 years. There were really good holes between 7-12th east. Lots of big Whiting and Black Drum. And it is away from the pier. But I have not fished Folly in a couple of years. My trick was arrive early leave early…unless I was wearing the big Black Drum out. This time of year should be no problem from “Pilgrims”.
