IOP - Surf or wade/shore spots, crabbing and fish?

Had to re-register as it has been awhile since I was on the site.
Will be making the trek to IOP beachfront for the week of August 5th.
What, if anything, will be biting in the surf at that time? Mostly small bait stealers?

Is there any place to take the kids crabbing that we won’t get in trouble? How about a place to throw a cast net to catch shrimp or mullet for bait?
How about shore/wade fishing the back channels in that area? Any access points?

I’ll be taking a couple long rods to throw out a shark bait or two in the evenings/night. Any of the fish houses willing to part with scraps/fish heads that I could use for big bait?

thanks in advance…

That depends where on the IOP your headed. Shrimp on a drop or carolina rig will catch almost anything. I’ve never tried it but I’d think anywhere around the rocks at the Breach Inlet would produce blues in a drop trap or anywhere along either side for a hardline. If your going to the Dunes I know a spot for reds and whiting.

We are staying beachfront b/w 6th and 7th.

Anyone know of any place to rent a SOT kayak for the week that is reasonable? Got a quote for a week rental at Coastal expeditions and they want $220 for the week and that was for a sit in model. A little steep for me seeing as I can probably buy a used one for not much more than that and I want a SOT to take it out on the beach front when the wind/waves permit.

Is there any “public” access points on the backside of IOP for crabbing or fishing access? I see lots of long docks on Google heading back to the channel but I am sure those are all private. How about any piers or parks up near Shem creek?

Thanks for the help…

Not many if any public access to the ICW when it comes to a dock or something like that to put a crab pot out. Shem creek has a pier/park that you can fish and lower a trap. Also, if you go to breech inlet, go under the bridge on the ICW side and you can throw out some lines there and a pot. Although a lot of porpoise come through there as well as kayakers

You can fish or crab in breech inlet like papajohick said, but do not get in the water in breech inlet. The signs are no joke. The current is strong and will sweep you off your feet. Be careful, especially with kids in this area. If surf fishing try the area of the beach close to breech inlet, 3rd and 4th ave. Water is very warm and most likely you will catch lots of small sharks and whiting, but you never know what will bite in the surf.

A couple of places you might try. The Shem Creek Park has a pier/walkway over the marsh along Shem Creek. At the end is a covered area which is used for fishing and crabbing. Another spot is Pitt St Bridge. This is in Old Village Mt Pleasant on the backside of Sullivans Island. Type “Pitt St Bridge” into Google Maps and it should come up. Plenty of spots along the causeway and pier to fish or crab. There is also a kayak launch into the small creek running parallel. Crabbing here is usually pretty productive, but fishing can be hit or miss. I have caught lots of fish here - reds, trout, flounder-but most are usually on the smaller side. I live close by, but usually drive to the beach to surf fish. Just not a big fan of pier fishing.

Almost forgot. There is also a dock behind Ft Moultrie on Sullivans Island. It is accessible to the public. I have never fished or crabbed from it, but my guess it you would find both crabs and fish here.

Don’t overlook the Mt Pleasant Pier underneath the Ravenel Bridge for quality fish also. That’s turned out to be a pretty good pier. Youtube “Jigging Jerry” and you’ll see how to catch anything you want off that pier. Its a nice safe environment and good for the family. Its about a ten mile drive from IOP. $5 a day for adults and $3 for children under 12.

If you want to catch sharks, go to Breach Inlet or fish off the beach on the ocean/harbor side. There’s also good numbers of redfish that cruise around there closer to the docks on the other side of the bridge. That’s got to be great shark fishing off Sullivan’s in front of Ft Moultrie.

If you get a yak, you can put in at Station 26 ramp. Its a dirt ramp that is only open to yaks and paddleboards now. This ramp floods over on tides over 6’, so pay attention. Your car will get wet if you park here on a flood tide (new moon or full moon tides)

Post a report and let us know how you do!

Thanks gentleman…esp. for the thumbtack map! Saw some of the places mentioned in my google earth scouting. Some I didn’t notice. I guess the dock at Ft. Moultrie is the T-head on the creek behind it?

With five kids 7-11, crabbing is a lot of fun…hoping to get them on some.
For the kayak, I may end up just buying a cheap Lifetime Tahoma SOT at Wally world, if they have any in stock down there. Only $165 with a paddle and seat included. If I can’t figure out how to get it home, I’ll just leave it at the beach house for the next renters to enjoy…as long as the Owner doesn’t mind. Much cheaper than a rental…

Is it worth it/legal to shore fish from the Station 26 ramp area? That creek seems a little small but maybe ok at normal tide?
Is the bottom mud or sand back in that area? Any wade fishing or am I going to sink to my waist?

Last time @ IOP, I never even broke out my fishing gear. Haven’t had a chance to fish at all up here in yankeeland yet this year so I am itchin’…
Thanks again.

One more thing before my trip, other than catching my own with a cast net, where is the closest place to buy live shrimp/mud minnows or finger mullet on IOP? Do I need to run all the way up to the IOP marina?

Steelers, i can hook you up on the kayak. Text me at 843 582 1991. I’ve got a 2 person sit on top
