I’ve posted a couple of times and have been lurking for a while. I’m headed to IOP in a couple of weeks and will be surf fishing every morning of my vacation. I’d like to catch dinner for my family one night but most of the fish being caught probably won’t make good table fare… maybe! I know flounder, and sea trout are good eating, but they don’t seem to be in abundance in the surf.
I’m staying towards the Breach Inlet end of IOP. Are there a few areas that may hold flounder or sea trout? Any advice would be very much appreciated!!
If it’s dinner youre after then target whiting. They’re plentiful this time of year. Use small hooks and shrimp. You won’t have any trouble catching 20 in a morning and they’re pretty good to eat.

Last summer we caught lots of whiting on IOP and kept a handful of larger ones a couple mornings. They were easy to filet and were great for dinner. We did let a few nice sea trout go, so they are out there from time to time and are great to eat too. Caught quite a few pompano last summer, but they were all too small. Maybe you will catch bigger ones. We got everything on frozen shrimp, and a couple of the trout on small mullet we cast netted. Good luck.
