Does anybody have any fishing information about going from the shore in that area (types of fish, baits, how heavy is the current)? Is there public parking on either side of the bridge? Thanks, as I will be coming from 110 miles away to get on some awesome fishing!!!
Most folks around here wont recognize the bridge by that name. Most just refer to it as Breach Inlet. I used to fish that area, but never had much luck. I had the most luck on the IOP side (2nd Ave to 5th Ave) fishing from the beach out into the surf, not the inlet. Types of fish are typical surf fish - whiting, sharks, trout, red drum, etc. I always recommend fresh bait, not frozen or artificials, for surf fishing - shrimp and cut mullet for the most part. Current in Breach Inlet is very strong. It is illegal to swim or wade in Breach Inlet, and many have drowned there. Do not get in the water in the inlet. There is free public parking on both sides of the inlet. There are small public parking lots on both the Sullivans Island and the IOP sides. If you PM or email me and let me know when you will be fishing and what you want to target, I can provide more specific information about timing, equipment, locations, bait, etc.
Awesome and I will…Thanks!!!
The inlet is not very good except for whiting. Go a few streets down, third on iop and the fishing is much better.
Yeah, I was thinking about walking from the parking area by the bridge. But is there any parking between 3rd and 5th streets? Also, is the Whiting easy to catch over on the beach?
You can park on 3rd or 5th on the side of the roads if you get there early and there is beach access. Was there today but the current was way too strong.
Breach can be a good place for decent sized red drum and the occasional black drum and sea trout.
For red drum/redfish and the possible sea trout/flounder, use live finger mullet or mud minnows (mud minnows available for a decent price at Haddrel’s tackle shop in Mt. Pleasant).
Live shrimp are also pretty good for this, but they may not be available yet unless they are carting them in from Florida at Haddrells. Live shrimp are far harder to keep alive in the bucket and keep on the hook.
Cut squid is probably the best whiting bait out there (personal experience/opinion) and it stays on the hook very well.
… The Cross of Christ is the anvil upon which the hammer of evil wore itself out.
Whiting will hit shrimp just fine there now. We usually catch whiting there and move to the beach to catch sharks, especially with all the sharpnose pups. If you throw out a piece of cut whiting you will catch some sharpnose if your into that. Kinda fun and easy
Yeah I will probably stop at Walmart and get some bait. I am working on making some homemade Sputnik weights since a 9oz would be like $8 to keep bait down in the heavy surf. When I get them done I will throw up a picture. Going to use some 10’ and 12’ surf rods. Do you guys have any problems with putting pvc poles in the sand between 3rd and 5th street? I usually put them in the sand parallel to the surf so the water seals the pole. Might need a wood block and a hammer if it is to hard.
I just wanted to say thanks for all the information that you guys have given to me. It is was a big help and I am so ready to get into some surf fishing this weekend.
Cut the ends of the PVC like jack-o-lantern teeth and you can screw them right in near the water line. No need to carry a hammer or a block.
Cutting on a 45 degree angle is useless.
Thank goodness I did not go fishing today. I saw two problems with the area we went swimming at with my children. I was able to park at the Breach inlet parking area, so no complaints there. Then we walked to the 2nd ave beach access and went on out. Beautiful beach and the water was great for my 7 and 8 year old. And that is when it was apparent to me that yeah between 3rd and 5th Ave is where you need to be to surf fish and early morning like 0600L to 0900L and after 0830L would be the best times. To many people up that way and the beach at 2nd Ave is way to long for my normal 80 class spinning reels so I was thinking a kayak and a 600 class Diawa real with a Penn Standup would be awesome at night. So we left, of course burnt to a crisp, and headed down towards Fort Moultrie to scout the fishing area and WOW you can fish off the Breah Inlet bridge. This is going to be done during and incoming tide for some monzo shark lip rippin action. That is so on!!! And thanks for the PVC pipe jack-o-lantern teeth idea. I was thinking like 48" long?
48" is good, will only stick out 36" if buried 12"…
You get the idea…
Def fish off the bridge! Last year caught many bsb, whiting, and Spanish mackerel off that bridge. Just try catch when tide coming in and avoid boat traffic! Good luck!
Trick for your PVC holders in good sand, Angle them back about 5 to 10 degrees away from the water and at the waterline/wet sand and put your mouth inside them and make a seal around it with your cheeks. Start sucking. Yeah, you’ll look like a fool and your buddies will rip on you but you can sink the pvc holder as deep as you want, very quickly, and it is hard to get out…They can easily withstand a 5’ blacktip on a 12’ rod taking out 10# of drag and stay put…

Cool on the beach spike for the surf fishing…Thanks!

And what bait seems to get em to bite off that bridge? Let me guess live shrimp…LOL!
Actually live finger mullet and menhaden
Thanks! Where did you buy them at? Or can I net for some off the beaches?
Usually u can net finger mullet in creeks near folly or the beach. Menhaden u can catch if wanna throw net from bridge. I only recommend that if good with net and it’s smaller
Few yrs ago caught a 6.5 lb trout there live finger mullet from the bridge. Sullivan side near the rocks i’ve had decent catches of flounder (live mud minnows)and reds (FRESH shrimp). Incoming tide is best.
Live for today and let tomorrow worry about itself.
