Took a quick trip to the beach today from 4 on to 6pm. Caught my bait within ten minutes and waited about a hour and 30 minutes before I caught a nice blacktip. You guys will need at least 5 ounces to hold bottom or use sputnik style weights. The surf was pretty ugly today.

where were you? i was down at 3rd street, got 2 big rays yeasterday, took 6 ozs to (spud plus 2 oz added on) to hold.

Nice!

I was to the left of the park. I usually fish around 3rd and have very good luck there. Lots of sandbars in that area.

you going out tonight? wind looks better.

What bait did you catch ? Did you throw a cast net?

As of Sunday, I haven’t seen any bait in the surf yet. No mullet.
He probably used a whole or half whiting that he caught on a piece of shrimp.
I used half a bluefish on Sunday but not bite.
Did catch a pompano on my double drop which was cool.

I can’t go out again til Sunday. I take two poles. One small one rigged with a 4 oz pyramid sinker and tiny hooks. I fish that one first to get a whiting. As soon as I get a good size whiting I put it right back out on the big rod and wait. Either shrimp or squid for the whiting. Small hooks are the secret for them.

Nice catch Captain! We’ll be targeting our first blacktips tomorrow evening down at Folly, that looks like the ideal size we are hoping for so maybe we will get lucky.

btshipp - I’m going to be on Folly tomorrow night after work around 6, and was looking to catch some bait for sharking on Saturday, but was also going to have a bait out for BTs.

What area are y’all fishing? Going solo, so might want to be within sight in case I need some help. That is, if you don’t mind.

Thanks, btshipp. Good luck. Make sure you take some heavy weights. The current has been pretty strong lately. Sputnik style weights are a big help if you can find them.

Definitely, we’ll be using the 4oz sputz so hopefully that will dig in, I’ve fished those in pretty nasty surf and still held bottom for the most part.

Jnail, we typically go to the south side between 7th and 9th street, easy parking and a lot less tourists. The only thing is the renourishment project is getting close to that area and if the current/wind is coming out of the north it will muck up the water something awful. We’ll probably get out there around 5-5:30 and check the conditions, if nasty we will head up the the lighthouse side. I still have to put a few shark rigs together, forgot crimps on my last trip to Haddrell’s. Look for a silver Nissan Maxima or a white 90s Subaru wagon and you’ll find us.

Keep thinking that one day I will be on Antiques Roadshow and one of those guys will tell me that I am in possession of the most rare saltwater fishing possession since the bone hook. "The Sputnik Sinker".

Dang good looking fish (shark), killinR.

Thank you ifly. I know those sinkers are really weird looking little things but they sure do help when the current is moving. They’re expensive too!

Buy the Sputniks on EBAY in bulk a lot cheaper. Hey by the way does it matter if the sputnik has a long lire on it. Some have the eye directly on the weight section. And also has anybody ever used the triangle Surf Claw weights. Dude, shark fishing is a good time!
