is yamalube imperative for yamahas

or does any 2 stroke, like quiksilver do the job?

I’ve been told by dealers that Yamaha is not in the oil business… they make it for a reason. That’s about all I can tell you. A technician could probably tell you more.

Motor specs say any TCW IW rated 2 stroke oil is fine for outboards. I don’t think Yamaha makes any of thier own oil.

which motor?
yamaha does not make oil, but the oil company blends the oil to yamaha specifics

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

Any TCW-3 2-stroke oil will be fine. I’ve run quicksilver in my yamaha for years without a problem. Of course, I still mix my own fuel/oil at the 50:1 ratio, so that probably helps my motor.

My techs tell me yama lube only for yamaha’s and that it is a better oil. I am not a oil guy nor do I know what goes in two stroke oil but I do know thats what they preach so I listen.

From reds to marlin you got it.

No, it is not imperative

I do the same. Numerous Yamaha guys have told me to use it so I do.

I bought my own 5 gallon jug. I take it to Hanckle and they fill it up for 18 bucks a gallon. That competes with the quicksilver price. Unless you go with some lawnmower brand 2 stroke oil that I will not do. To much at risk for a couple bucks.

the reason I asked what motor…
if its a carbed motor, you can safely run any TCW-III oil you want to, even some lawnmower brand
if its a fuel injected motor, yamaha merc or OMC, I would suggest running the manufacturers oil.

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

All I can say is I tried the other stuff(quicksilver) and I had a clogged oil filter months later. Other than that, I have always run Yamalube and no issues. Run the Yammy stuff and don’t worry about it. If price is an issue, you can buy it in bulk from some of the dealers. I think I remember Hankel saying they will sell it to you in bulk if you bring a proper container. You could prob. get a 7 gallon gas tank and take that. Not sure…

If you are running a HPDI you have to run a synthetic blend oil like Yamalube, Bomb XD50 or Merc Premium Plus. DFI engines like that don’t have 5-20gph of cooling fuel passing thru the crankcase. Crankcase temps on those engine will burn straight dino oil and carbon the crankcase.

If you are running a carbed Yam. I still recommed a synthetic blend. They burn much cleaner and will reduce carbon build up…

Call around for best prices on OEM oils. Your engine will run longer on good oil…

this is a 97 25 hp motor, no HPDI or anything. The reason I ask is on sunday, the lawnmower stuff is all I could find and I wasnt about to go to the Orangeburg walmart on Sunday afternoon for the chance at some quiksilver. thanks for the responses guys.

yamalube is not a synthetic oil

From reds to marlin you got it.

Yamaha is pushing synthetic now but has not been synthetic in the past. I dont think any synthetic was being made by Yamaha when my ol’ 2002 model OX66 was made.

they still are not a true synthetic oil. they say semi synthetic: whatever that means.

Semi is a 50/50 blend, yamalube is made by chevron/texaco.

for that motor i would be running something cheaper than yamalube. Any tcw3 will be fine. Just decarb the motor reguraly.

if you have an older motor why would you want to run something cheap when you can run something a little bit more and better your chances on extending the life of your motor.

I agree. For a few dollars more per quart, go with the good stuff!

If it costs more it must be better, right?.
